That's a good one .. Learn something new everyday..

Focus has a lovely chassis , even on the 1.8 tdci with sport suspension. You take it down a B road and you can feel it in it. Great chassis.
The St is great, noise , comfort, reasonably powerful .
The Astra ... I've never driven one but any big power turbo fwd will have a certain amount of torque steer , you're kidding yourself if you say otherwise .not sure on the handling issue either but I'd still choose the focus even if the tax bothered me

I love the ST but the OEM isn't a pile of muck either. There's compromise in any choice.

Cup Megane suspension is very harsh on our bad roads.

St has just over 2.5 cc so tax is 1294 not 1080.

Civic has the boy racer stigma.

Golf's are common.

What sort of driving do you do and what are you looking for the car to do?

Cheers lads and yeah unfortunately those extra few cc's cost a f**king fortune.

I do mostly short hops i live in malahide and work out at the airport (apprentice aricraft engineer), weekend driving is never that eventful except the odd random trip down the country, you know yourselves.

i love the idea of the, opc but its outright cost is a factor, the focus seems to be the overall crowd pleaser with everyone i talk to, im just very ignorant about non jap cars like what they are like to deal with, the way im currently thinking about it is i want something thats as comfortable as my most comfortable car iv owned (is 200) but will go when i put my foot down, will start when i sit in to it, and doesnt rattle and knock and have wrecked door seals ect ect that iv been plauged with in my cheap car history.

But youre all right iv to drive them both before i make any decisions.

So phone call from insurance companies has informed me that the St will cost more to insure than the wrx so will be a extra €1400 total of €2102 so looks like opc is the only realistic option apart from the golf

What age are you and who's the insurer?

That's crazy prices. Friend of mine had an 07 ST when he was 25 and he paid half that! Was even cheaper again for him when he moved to a hawk STI. Think it was AXA or Aviva he was insured it.

With AXA on the STI for me was 1500 I'm 23 with 5 years ncb.

Check liberty, TheAA etc. Shop around and you'll get a better quote!

You'd insure a BE/BL (B4,GT) Legacy with 280bhp (after remap) for less than any hot hatch..won't handle as well off the shelf as an impreza but certainly outrun an OPC over any given road

That's not true. A friend of mine has a standard 2003 b4 And my opc is way faster due to the weight difference and the b4 being dead off the line.

dead off the line? your friend doesn't know how to launch an AWD, officiall 0-60- time for a B4 is 5.6 seconds, whats it for an OPC Astra 7 odd? and aside from offical times your average driver won't get that Astra any where near it without lighting up the front tyres.
The B4 has approx 185bhp per tonne the Astra has 176 per tonne...so where is the Astra getting any advantage?

We've had them up against each other I used own a b4.....my astra opc is way quicker and there's a massive weight difference between the two cars.

wouldn't believe that weight, more like 1400kg with fluids etc...
even if that is correct for Astra you now have 192bhp per tonne, for the B4 you have 186bhp per tonne( Rev d on are even lighter with aluminium doors and bonnet)...take into account we already know the B4 is quicker to 60 with AWD, so has already over come most of the initial weight and inertia getting to 60, the Astra is not going to pass it..then when you hit a corner and on exit the Astra spins away half its power.
I know you had both cars, but I don't know what your B4 was like.
