Track day car

Last night was a night for a little TLC! The car was manky, no matte how well I masked it there was still small spots of black over spray.
Thankfully this all came off! It?s all ready now for some mapping on Friday, I?m not looking for slight adjustments for 102 fuel and new exhaust.

Devlopments keep coming with Saxo and last night myself and Dec were burning the midnight oil!
We started with a full sheet of 2mm aluminum and began to form the rear diffuser.

From front to back the diffuser is 1550mm, the idea is to create a nice flow of air out from under the car. This should really help on the high speed corners and help reduce drag on the straights.

Its pretty much all made from one piece and bent into shape, using a very modest setup:)

Rear strakes will be done tonight, they will be cut and get riveted into place. Work in progress but it?s coming together!

Last night I got to finish my rear diffuser with the inclusion of two strakes. I got out for some testing at the speedfreaks track day on Paddy?s Day but it?s was very wet. The car went very well but I was really hoping for some dry track time to give the car a proper run.

 Jesus some work gone into that rear diffuser  does it do that much work Adrian . I know the air will flow better past the rear bumper Just. Wondering how much

Cheers Joe!
I always felt the car got very light on the rear at high speed. There was so much space from the spare wheel well, it had to be trapping air and creating lift and acting as an air brake. I don?t want a big wing causing drag so this was the best way I could think to solve the issue. I?ll be doing more flat sections in time but this is it for now. Only a little over a week now to race day so I may tackle a few more bits now.

The last two evenings we have been busy building the front splitter to finish the aero on the car. The first round of the championship is this Saturday in kirkistown, but the car is very near ready.

First thing was to cut a 100mm strip of 2mm aluminum as the main front air dam section. This gives the Front approx 50mm extra drop.

Next up was the cut out the bottom section. We are covering as much area as possible under the engine and bolting back to the lower strut brace.

We made some brackets to bolt the splitter into the bottom of the bumper.

This is bolted together with some lovely stainless steel bolts, thanks to Dec:)

With everything offered up and bolted in place, I also made up two more support brackets from the chassis legs to take any flex or rattle out of it. It?s very solid not and very happy with the mounting.

As you can see from above it?s time to paint;)

First coat was some etch primer for the aluminum, then a coat of satin black for the top section. Once done I could apply the final yellow to the bottom.

We even bent up little wings on the ends:) that?s the latest update for now. Next update may be more like a race weekend review and hopefully a good one!

Sorry for the lack of updates since the first rounds of the championship. Unfortunately it definitely didn?t go as planned.
After arriving in Kirkistown just in time for the final test session, we got the car unloaded and straight onto the track without checking much more than tyre pressure. After 10/15 mins of testing I thought the car preformed very well but could feel the rust in my own driving.

9e392ead5fb6456186285c872aa28b75.jpg

Saturday morning I checked the car a bit more and noticed I had the car setup fully soft from the last Paddy?s Day Track Day which was very wet for the morning session.
I thought I?d stiffen things up a bit and see how things go for qualifying. The car didn?t feel near as good as it did on the Friday and it was almost impossible to keep the rear in check! I ended up qualifying p3 in class almost 2 seconds off the pace of P1 in class. I?m too upset over this as I?m well below the power to weight ratio of the EP3 TypeR in p1, I?m more annoyed as I actually didn?t go much slower last year on an ADO8 road tyre. I really struggled to get any heat into the rears, but the old Pirelli?s I was using may not suit the car and a softer compound may be needed.
Race 1 I ended up in the barrier due to this lack of grip and possibly a bit of bad driving from very little seat time or testing on new setup. The next video will also show the result of race 2:(

https://youtu.be/xzy2mAHyNoM

So definitely not the weekend I wanted but I still found positives! Myself Dec and Dec?s Brother had brought down the caravan and that in itself made the weekend. The lads were very helpful all weekend between cooking the grub and getting the car back out for race 2 I couldn?t have attempted it without them. The beers and banter was another high point of the weekend.
Some photos of the action below!

Update on the repair work to follow[emoji51]

So after getting the car home I started working on the damage.
09e4bd6e5e99486c12637146dcaec563.jpg

The rear driver side wheel is pretty much scrap and the whole trailing arm was completely twisted. After removing the trailing arm and clamping in the vice you can see how bad it was.

73eeb24a582dc9c1230afc7ff7ae1b43.jpg

My options were to try get a new trailing arm but Citroen don?t stock them anymore. But a phone call to my Sponsor at Hugo Loonam Motors and I was collecting a full car for spares. It?s just a 4 door 1.1 but the trailing arm is the same. I just needed to remove the axle and trailing arm and rebuild with new bearing and seal kit.

That?s the new donor:

Cleaned up new trailing arm fitted with new bearings and seals. I fit one extra bearing for extra strength and dump the plastic sleeve that comes with the kit.

All nice and straight again but need to try pick up a new OZ rim now:(
Don?t mind the red arrow that was me trying to explain something to someone at some stage!
There is some body work to be done but dent repair Mullingar will sort that.

With my bumper and new front splitter in Sh1t i sourced this front bumper from a 106 wide arch kit.

The plan was to split this, join it and make it fit. So last night I reduced it by 2? and bonded it with fiberglass and wire mesh from my old bumper.

Happy enough with how it looks now! Just need to fill the split and give it a coat of primer before wrapping. I did need a new grill which I had, but I wrapped that myself with some EBay carbon wrap.

I also had really bad brake shudder and that was killing my late braking in the car, ?which is where I make time? this turned out to be cracked discs. I have since went back to standard discs without any grooves.

The impact was so bad it broke my aluminum cable shifter bracket! This needs to be welded and possibly made a bit stronger.

I?m hoping to have everything sorted for the May Bank Holiday weekend Track Day but it will be a big push:(

That?s some work fair play great read this as before going back along time ago little do we realize how many problems fixes knock on effects races can have on the car each time looking back you nearly sorted out everything with simple enough work. If this blog was a magazine I?d buy it every month [emoji6] keep up the good work that was probably your biggest set back in kirkstown in a long time with the few knocks

Cheers Gary!
I sometimes wonder if anyone reads this but I kinda feel I must try keep the thread alive as long as the car lives[emoji28]
It?s been here from day one, so it?s basically the history of the car and my own journey in Motorsport I guess..

More work done tonight actually!
I started with some fiberglass fillers to finish the front section of the bumper. Once this drys I?ll sand it down and finish with some general body fillers. Once that?s all sorted I can give it a coat of primer then it?s ready for wrapping.

I was planning on buying or making fiberglass headlights but I kinda got a brainwave! I could easily just remove the outside plastic covers and use them. Once I have the brackets made for these I?ll clean them up and spray them Matt black :)
