Track day car

Last night we pretty much got everything under the engine bay sorted. The car is still very rich so the plan is tho fit the new exhaust Thursday evening and reassemble the front. Once it?s back together I can drop it with Martin for mapping. It?s so rich you can smell the petrol from the catch can.

Yes standard but all new and balanced. Restricted boost to around .7 bar so well within safe zone. Cams are cat cam 743?s. Only need around 225 bhp

Very near the finished product now but ?finished? is a word I?ll use lightly.
One of my main hold ups has been the exhaust, I needed to remove the side exit as it was way to loud. Myself and Dec stripped this out over two evenings and fitted a new rear exit pipe and an extra back box from a formula Renault.

I have another back box bought which I was waiting for delivery, but never came. Long story but pretty much got stung for a 60 euro back box. Happy to report it?s the only time anyone, in the 4 years of building this car actually did me a wrong turn.

With the new back box now fitted it?s a lot quieter, but without loosing its nice sound. Very happy with this little job and as always huge thanks to Dec for all his help with it.

Next on the list was to build back up the front of the car. I also cut away the centre section of the bumper to make more room for the extra coolers.

The new splitter would mimic the old one only the material would be 6mm marine ply.
I used aluminium before but said I?d change it up a little this time. I have enough in one sheet to make 2 for 30 euro so I?ll make a second for ?when? I break this one.

I did paint this with whatever paint I had on the shelf, just to seal the cut edges more than anything. Not sure how long it will last but the car is a garage queen so shouldn?t get wet between events.

I still have bits to do but it?s pretty much there and I?m delighted to have the car back together.
She got her first wash on paddy?s day, I?m surprised how well this livery is holding up after 2 seasons racing with very little rub marks anywhere.

We are holding of the mapping for now as it?s not overly important right now with the current health crisis going on. It was due in today but I didn?t drop it of, we agreed to see how things look in the next week of two. Can?t imagine we will be racing any time soon.
This is how she sits for now[emoji106]

 Great work Adrian all the hard work will be worth it . Will Be a bit of a wait now. But I?m sure some testing can begin

With the long break we most all have, I got some time to set some Jobs done.
First up was my leaking JP4 rockers. Had no joy sealing these so I went back to my original J4 covers.
As these were powder coated I had to get them sand blasted.

Once done I gave them a few coats of high temp paint and slapped them on with some Dirco sealer. Happily no more leaks:)

I couldn?t find the original spark plug cover and most likely dumped it.
So I got a new after market shiny one..

Another job I needed to do was fit a wide band gauge. It will be a while before I get the car mapped now, so I want to know how rich or lean the car actually is. I have been playing around with this and have the car running a lot better. I?ll upload a test run soon.

So after listening to all advice on fitting a bumper bar I decided to go at that last Sunday.
I had some 50mm corrugated Uni-strut lying around so this would work fine. Have very little room for much more but this is plenty strong and should help save one or two coolers.

I have all the little bits for the strut being an electrican, and could bolt brackets through the chassis legs with 8mm threaded bar.

I get great help as you can see:)

So before fitting everything back together, I trimmed the main hole in the bumper a bit bigger. This will help get much needed cooling into the bottom oil coolers. As the new splitter is marine ply I fitted a 1mm aluminum heat shield under the exhaust just as a precaution.

Great stuff Adrian

Do you know how much the car weighs now??

And now been a race driver for a few years do you ever see yourself wanting a fast road car again, as I've read a good few race car drivers just like to be comfortable in there road cars?

I?d say it?s up around 15/20kg or so but didn?t check as yet.
But hopefully up around 70bhp.
At some stage I?d love another Subaru but for the moment I can?t have my cake, and eat it as they say:)
The Transit Custom is plenty of comfort for now:)

Good call on the bumper bracket man, better safe than sorry I think????
I'd prefer the stainless cover too myself, gives it a bit of bling ????
Good work dude ????

Something I overlooked was actually calibrating my coolant sensor. As I?m not using an omex unit it?s original needs to be paired to the ECU.
It was handy enough using the Map 4000 software and an electric kettle.

This photo was my first attempt, but I later extended the lead to keep the kettle close to me. I ?Found? I very handy electronic thermostat that had a little probe to dip into water, as the water heats I could plot a new scale for the ECU.
Thermostat later returned to the kitchen:)

I have also added a new Racetech boost gauge, something I always wanted in a race car:)

My water and oil temp gauges were never accurate, they were real cheap crap but just never got around to changing them.
I have picked up a second hand Racetech water temp with sender and I?ll get the oil to match.
