After checking out the front setup on the car I found some scary results. I should have had at least 3.5 degrees positive caster and found to just have over 2 degrees.
I found I wasn?t over happy with the handling of the car and didn?t know exactly why.
This is the first time I ever had the car on caster plates and, so never actually knew how bad things were. In inspection to see what was causing this I found both wishbones were bent backwards!
I had fitted Polypenco Nylon bushings a few years back any they were still perfect, but the actual steel had bent. I presume a few years of kerb bashing and hard braking on slicks has caused this.
Below you can see how far back the near side wheel was!
So after a lot of research I have decided I can?t fit a standard part here again. I?m new fitting Satchell adjustable front arms. These are a lot stronger and will allow caster adjustments on rear compression strut.
These don?t allow me use the front roll bar so that?s gone in the bin.
Colin Statchell has done testing with and without roll bar and found the roll bar no advantage.
Gaz have recommended a higher front spring rate so I?ll be fitting new springs as part of the new front setup.
My rear roll bar and torsion bars were standard and to small so I went in the hunt to find something a little better. It?s near impossible without spending a fortune on aftermarket parts!
I got lucky this time and a well known rally man with French stuff rang me with a cup spec axel. I removed all the good bits and fitted to my own. This gave me an extra 2mm on all bars and should work a lot better.
These after market parts would be 170 sterling each in the UK so I was very lucky this time.
So I?m looking forward now to getting all this bits together and start building everything back up. Hopefully be testing early July once I get mapped.
