Type R Box Gone - Go 6 Speed?

pugtk

Sunday Drivers
So my type r box has started to whine on idle and increases in pitch with rpm. All gears are perfect, so more than likely just a bearing.

But the DCCD has never worked right, with a clunking on slow/tight radius turns.

Now, do I just get the box built/buy second hand or go 6 speed.

I was in touch with ali a few weeks back, he said he can look at the centre diff but there's no guarantee he can do anything with it. So with that said would I be aswell picking up a full type r box.

How much is a 6 speed dccd conversion going for these days? vs the price of a type r box?

Trying to find a type r box is hard enough known what it like till you put it in is another story . Get your own rebuild would be the cheapest way . 6 speed dccd box?s are 2500 sterling -3500 euros. . . And most I see for sale have come out of low klms cars which is hard to understand as there ain?t to many low klm cars out there now .

Would you go none dccd as as it would be cheaper usually 1800-2500 euros

id just get your own rebuilt

Most definitely go 6 speed will be the best mod you ever do to the car, the 5 speeds are great craic for a quick blast but the short gears get annoying if driving regularly or long journeys.

I have both dccd and non dccd and never use it when I do drive them, I couldn't justify the extra cost of dccd over non dccd.

I would get the box inspected first and see what it?s going to cost, it may not be too bad.
David Byrne in Wexford specialises in gearbox rebuilds and is heavily involved in Repairs to rally cars, and he would be worth a shout, very straight up fella.

As Seanie said , Very few use dccd in new age cars it?s usually always left in auto Unless less your on track or being an is200 :snooty: . So non dccd 6 speed is the way to go and cheaper too .

That's not necessarily that it doesn't work, mine does that and it works fine, its the type of oil used or I am hoping it is. Got some oil via buddy of mine from Ali and my buddy says it cured his so I am hoping it will cure mine.
This is the second car I have had the issue. I'll let you know if it works and also if I can find out what it is as its in an unmarked can!

Regarding your gearbox dilemma 6 speed be some job however the way the prices of type R's are going I would be keeping it as original as possible.

Original osmiginal, the once a decade a drive my cars you want to enjoy it.
The way property prices are don't sleep in your bed either it might affect the resale value and if you do sleep in your bed keep your hands off the missus you want to keep the mileage on her low for the next lad

Says yer man who never drives any of his!!!

a 6 speed box in a type r totally ruins the driving off them for a fun point of view
Yes on a motorway its much better but who the hell buys one to sit on a motorway
If motorway driving is a issue just fit the longer uk 5th gear in the type r box

i got flamed on here for saying it before but its just my opinion , i had 1 type r with newage 6 speed non dccd setup and it was boring as hell to drive , ruined what made the type r fun to drive for me

It really depends on the 6 speed box . A 6 speed from a jdm bug is a great short ratio box and suits it great. Given the choice over 2 type r I take the 6 speed every time

Different strokes for different folks
3 type rs in the shed 2 have 6 speed and 3rd has 6 speed on the floor waiting to go in 1st to 5th no noticeable difference and 5 speed n? good to you at 160 mph wouldn't take a present of a 5 speed.

TO say it ruined the drive of the car?? I noticed no difference first to fifth if you are running decent power and nicer gear change bigger clutch what's not to like, rest of the car is unchanged??

As I said when I take them out once a decade, 5 speed can still be there after with it to sell with car doesn't affect originality.
May not be out often but when it's out its flat out

What's ruins the drive of a car is an uprated clutch, pedal too heavy bites too hard, an extra gear is an advantage

dont have a heart attack seanie lol

just my opinion , i wouldnt touch one , convert yours to auto if you like , whatever your into

I don't get excited Stephen as I said diffent strokes for different folks might consider a cvt next for cruising around the joints are getting stiff with age this changing gear business is hard work especially with an extra 1 ????

i dont see the point in lads buying type r at all myself

1.5 2dr looks the same and half the running costs lol

For a yoke that is rarely driven , I?d tend to stick with a 5 speed but if doing long spins and road trips 6 speed is ideal and once it?s in you probably never have to do anything gearbox wise again with the car
