Story! New 1.5R owner

Story lads, Im the proud new owner of an old '07 Impreza 1.5r - pretty tame as goes Subarus but no harm there hahah

Main reason for joining is for maintenance advice - I'm intent on treating this car to some TLC and want to do the majority of repairs myself, but Im no specialist so I'll be frequenting the threads here for sure

First order of business for me is finding a proper service manual for this model - there's no shortage of manuals for WRX/STI Impreza's but there seems to be sweet-f$%*-all for the 1.5R. Pretty much all I know is that the engine is either an EJ15 or an EL... if anyone knows where to find that manual I'd appreciate the tip!

Car itself is in decent condition apart from some of the body work which, while not rusted, got absolutely mangled by one of the previous owners who tried installing a new radio (he didnt know how and mangled all the plastic around the sides), side skirts which have missing/mismatched bolts and rivets holding them on, and a WRX-style spoiler. The dope botched it to say the least :lol2: the silicon sealing on the spoiler doesn't keep water out, so I've since resealed it to prevent the whole boot molding/rusting, and removed the sideskirts so that I can actually fit a jack under the car.

Engine has 130,000KM on it, and has a few issues that don't seem too major:
  • Idles a little low after it's warmed up - around the 700RPM mark if the tachometer is trust-worthy, she also shudders very very slightly when idling like this which I assume is down to misfires at low engine speed? This might also be related to the next issue...
  • Seems like it runs a little rich as goes air-fuel. There's a slight petrolish whiff off the exhaust anyway, so somethings not burning quite right, but I've been waiting for a dry day to diagnose this... Cork weather like.

If yee have any wisdom for diagnosing the above, toss it below. I'd appreciate it! Just dont tell me I might have a cracked head-gasket or totally spent piston rings because I might cry :lol2: otherwise i'll just follow the air and fuel lines until I find an issue - starting with the air filter and airflow sensor.

Enjoy the photo although its nothing yee haven't seen before I'd say haha

Welcome along Alex ????????
Nice straight car you got yourself there. Few small little issues but I'd say nothing major. One the guys will know for sure, first Subaru?

Welcome to the club, happy motoring ????????

Thanks for the welcome Eoin! Yeah first Subaru, it's a pleasure so far, the engine's tiny but it still has the slight rumble that you get off it's bigger siblings hahah

If you upgrade to WRX manifold you'll unlock the full rumble ????
1.6 blobeye local to me and sounds like the dogs danglies ????????

I'm sure you'll find yourself in a turbo model sooner or later lol

The problems your describing at the start is nothing new to me, thats how 1.5R behave.. been having mine for 4 years now and due to boxer exgine and cause its 1.5, it will be rich in fuel. However adding more mods to it, like cat back exhaust wont help either [emoji28]. So just drive it, see how it is. And later get a clean wrx [emoji846]. Well thats been my plan for the past 2 years, but the insurance companies know how to f*ck things over [emoji23].

Welcome along to the party thanks for introducing yourself[emoji122][emoji122]

Try cleaning the maf or replacing that could be issue with low idle or shudder/rev bounce your describing.

Cleaned mine in forester didn't resolve it so replaced and all good.

Presume theres a icv (Idle control valve on the 1.5) worth looking into cleaning too as can stick and cause issues

A good service oil/filters ect ect always stand to car.

Just had quick look on Ebay first result there might be of use to you (second one might be for hatch)

Welcome along alex  . Nothing wrong with 1.5 or 1.6 imprezas we all started off somewhere . . Regards the idle issues start with the basics check the air filter and plugs first and than fo from there if there all good . Rule out the simple things first

Welcome !

Started with a 1.6 myself ,

700rpm sounds about right for warm idle , my 1.6 and 2.0 were same.
They were both very contrary about petrol quality and that caused hesitation and funny lumpy running feel from them .
Always kept maxol or Texaco in it and ran better believe it or not ,
