Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond will be "back to his old self" in about six months, according to the specialist looking after him.
Hammond, who was today transferred to a private hospital in Bristol, was said to be "doing well" eight days after the 300mph dragster crash that left him with a brain injury.

"He has had what I have already termed a significant brain injury," said Stuart Ross, Hammond's consultant neurosurgeon.

"There is no getting around that. There comes a period now which is unfortunately slow and is difficult to get through. But there comes a period when he has to get over the injury.

"He has to rest and allow his brain to recover and that takes time. I'm sure that once that period is over he will be back to his old self."

Mr Ross put that timescale at about six months, a diagnosis backed by other experts in the field.

"The most important thing in all recovery will be sleep, lots and lots of sleep," said Nottingham-based neurosurgeon John Firth.

Hammond was today taken by air from Leeds General Infirmary to a Bupa hospital in Clifton, Bristol, near to his Gloucestershire home.
