Not sure was there too many off here in Galway yesterday but great pace at the front with the R5 cars and Jennings.
With all the new generation stuff still hard to beat the noise and grunt out of these two yesterday......

Less and less entries with Subarus it seems each year and these need to be pushed to the very limit to keep pace with the Fords and Skodas. Even the Evos have a job to do it seemed.

The roads were very greasy though and Jennings found out the hard way. SS1 was wild in places and where I was standing there was muck flying when they hit the ditch. Here’s a few snaps.

Nice driver entry, obviously msi is throwing money about to get R5 entries. The great come back of irish rallies. ?? Unfortunately I don't think so, R5s will never draw crowds like stop 10 wrc line up will. Good driver's and some nice cars yesterday, some big offs in early stages , looking forward to national championship

Having said that, I went to my usual spot for SS1 and it was packed with people, it was mental but I?d say the other stages were a bit more sparse. Totally agree though, the R5 just don?t get me excited. I can appreciate the technology and speed but the Subarus, Evos, Escorts and so on draw the crowds at the end of the day.

I also thought the marshaling was poor. Where I was on SS1, everyone was pushed back really far but when the cars began passing by, the crowds just moved up and the marshalls didn?t say a thing. If something happened, the marshalls at that point would be responsible and that would be the motor club screwed for insurance.

nobody wants to see modern 4wd or r5 cars

lads want mk 2 escorts sideways out the gap every corner
to boring looking at 4wd
they even sound crap compared to mid to late 90s 4wd cars with the old fashion anti lag

I?d be of same view
No spectators want to see a rally car drive through stages no mistakes just because there so far ahead of the game weather it be car or budget that lads have. Plus reason too why older cars escorts,Subaru, evos have a big following is there around longer and have earned there stripes as they say. As sc says want to go and see a rear wheel coming out of a corner 100 times sideways tell your kids wait till you hear this Subaru more memorable than the newer stuff. I think 99% of people love a bit of noise anti lag etc on these days out I do

I Don?t agree with that argument, we all started looking at Rallying years ago and they are the cars we remember escort, Subarus evos Peugeot Toyota , so that?s what comes to mind when we think rally cars . People said the same thing after group B died , that rallying was dead, but it wasn?t the case is still went on and the guys who remember group b say rallying was not the same after it ended , and now we are saying that rallying is not the same and the next generation of young guys going to rallies will say the same thing when there older, it?s the same thing but with different cars but it?s not as we remembered it so it?s not as good in our view .

Rallying has to evolve if it?s to stay going . There?s a reason there called classic stages , just face it your getting old :icon_grin:

80s rallying was iconic , 90s was special , but todays there's jus no spirit in a 1.6turbo yaris and its jus hatchback pants imo .

Bang on Joe!

NO you just like Subaru?s as they were the popular car in rallying when you were young so it?s what got you hooked on the brand it?s the young 5-6 year old up who only see r5s now and the odd old rally car

@ joe/toyscrota

if so , can you name a current/latest rally icon/ poster car .

80's ,90's naughties , had them, but i cant think of anything current

But there's no arguing an R5, isn't as good to watch , good handling, good brakes. Less power.
It will be interesting to see what happens in donegal this year. Will top driver's be going for points in the R5 or try for the win. When most of them still have the wrc at home.

It?s a new era with the change over from world rally cars to r5 cars so it will take time to get it back to where it was . Do you remember any posters of group A Being up and they we?re the ultimate rally car . So yes it will take time . Even the drivers dont want to change to r5 but there is no show in town so your either in or your out .

To anser your question ross no I cant but the show ended for me when Subaru stoped in Wrc

this years / last years wrc has seen huge improvement in entertainment compared to previous years so it may turn again
looking at a r5 doesnt get most peoples juices going

if you are stood at a corner in the pissing rain at a stage theres very little excitement about more recent model cars from all age groups, bar interest times and positions

then you get some madman in a escort and the whole places cheers
dont think its all got to do with age
people want to be entertained
they want to see the frank kellys , if your 5 or 50

Yes agreed, I was standing on a bank over a high wall and they came around the corner and it caught the most seasoned drivers out and there was bits of grass flying and everyone loved it. Mind you, it was the Escorts, Subarus and Evos which were the ones giving the show. 5 or 50, everyone was cheering them on.

I wouldn't write off R5 altogether any car on its limit can be good to watch. There was some good battles last year and year before both in the forest and on tarmac.

Ross regarding a poster car of the current era then no i don't either but as was said above I'm sure the younger generation do have one. Of the noughties the S9 as Solberg won the championship with it and we all know how many blobs in some shape or form have been sold.

Of current the current cars the Yaris WRC seems to be building a bit of a following.
I'm off to Sweden tomorrow for the weekend as they are something else to see at full chat.
