Electric Gates Guy/Electrician needed

Electric gates took a dump last night unfortunately. There's a short somewhere in the system which i cant find but kept tripping the fuseboard until i disconnected them.

Just said i'd post here in case there's someone who knows what they're at. Either need someone who is familiar with electric gates or else an electrician who is good at fault finding.

Have to drive to the field to get out of the fooking house as we don't have a specialist key to open them manually :wall:

If anyone is available to come tomorrow, then gimme a shout on 0879327189 or reply here or via pm

have a set of keys that might suit Robbie , send me a pic if ya can of the motors , have a contact for guy who fits automated gates , think hes from meath so not to far from ya , i'll dig it out and text it to ya later

is it tripping constantly or only when you press to open gates
if constantly problem with supply to gates
if not open control box and disconnect motor one at time and try it should tell you which motor faults at
if box wet spray in loads wd40 and spray some into motors to will drive out moisture

Cheers lads

Its happening as soon as i tried to turn the power back on. It started last night by tripping, then when i plugged it back in, it was grand, gates were working and all, then about 20mins later as i was watching tv, it tripped everything again and now its trips everything straight away. I had a feeling it might be the supply alright, cause i went down to the box and switched it off the before trying to power up again from the house and everything tripped again. Its an old install and the wiring is a mess so the supply might be the easiest thing to find fault with. Only problem then is the digging involved to find it :hammerhead:

plugged in isnt exactly right did you open plug to make sure all ok
try plug it into lead ran off different socket see does make a difference

I thought it was a bit strange being on a plug too but there ya go, ha ha.

Ye, opened the plug and its grand, the sockets are fine too. Ran it through another socket and same thing happens :icon_sad:

:dontknow: run a lead down to gate and use small flex wit plugtop connected into control box to keep ya going till get someone out

Only problem is the distance to the gates from the house is about 100yards and the longest cord i have will only get me about 1/3 of the way down :wall:

Will have to borrow a full roll of 3 core from work on Monday :hammerhead:

I'm guessing its the RCD (wide switch with test button) that tripped. If so its not necessarly a major problem. To determine whether its the cable going from the house you will need to disconnect them from the point at which they are connected to the gate panel. First turn off supply, disconnect them and safely insulate loose ends with connectors. Switch supply back on and see if it still trips. If not its a problem with the gates, not the cable. I'd be guessing it is the RCD thats tripping and the problem won't be the cable.

Just want to say thanks for all the help lads, I isolated the problem to the supply on Sunday and ran a standard 3 core down last night which got the gates working again

Just need to price up 60m of armoured cable if any electricians on here would know the cost?

Karma for everyone later when im back at a pc
