Clutch slowly going to the floor and staying there

Hi All,

I have a 2000 Gen 3 B4, When driving, I can get the clutch to the floor but it sometimes doesn't return back, I have to pull it back with my foot. Can anyone tell me if it is a simple fix? I've been able to take the top off the reservoir bottle in the engine bay and pump the clutch a few times. It does bring the force back into the clutch, It it seems I have to do this more often now.

Do you think it would be a cheap enough fix?

Chances are the fluid has never been changed since the car was new , brake fluid absorbs moisture.
Try getting the fluid changed by a specialist as it it a tricky process.
If this doesn’t work then either the master or slave cylinder will need to be inspected and replaced if necessary.

From the receipts that I have, It shows that the gearbox oil was changed in 2019 or about 40K ago. It seems 30K is the mileage in order to change the gearbox oil out. It could need a clean out again ?. Europarts should be able to supply a master-slave Cyclinder.

Which is more likely to go of the master or Slave ?. I would nearly say the slave !?!

Gearbox oil has nothing to do with the brake fluid in the clutch pedal. đź‘Ťđź‘Ť swap it out and have it bleed properly And see then could be air in the system .

Agreed @scoobysub. I was looking to get the gearbox oil changed either way, given the receipts that I have, it is 10K over when it should have been done. So if I can get both the gearbox oil changed and the Master or slave replaced, would be a bonus and only one trip to the garage. My mistake I was talking about two things at once in the previous comment, My bad.

I don’t think I explained in my post properly , I’ve been through all this before in the last 14-15 years and over 200k and before you start firing parts at it change the fluid run about 1lt through it just to be safe , in reality 250ml should do it in most cases

Bleeding involves removing the slave from the gearbox to ensure the bleed needle is the highest point

Another point is , this can be a pig of a job and if not done properly you’ll end up with the same result that you have now
