A large proportion of Mechanics are leaving the Motor trade to take up employment in other industries or returning to third level to retrain.

Why?
? The Industry and Technology are changing
? Currently remuneration and flat rate expenses are not in line, infact they are well below other similar skilled trades.
? The Mechanic is classed as a semi-skilled worker, yet the safety of every family traveling around the country relies on the fastidious work of these same ?low skilled workers?.
? Career progression is non-existent.

Cause?

? Mechanics have no association who will represent them and fight for their best interests.
? Remuneration scale proposed by SIMI. Who are SIMI? SIMI are an association of large dealerships and Manufacturer franchises, they represent the interests of the employers and have little regard for the Mechanic or Independent Operator.
? Government has no regard for the Motor Trade, they propose banning the sale of Diesel and Petrol cars by 2030 but have made no provision for the thousands of Mechanics and Technicians that this will effect.
? It is a fact that Electric Vehicles require less maintenance, what impact will this have on existing jobs?
? Government lobbying is essential to ensure financial provisions are made for upskilling existing technicians to the new technology that they are forcing on us or alternatively make provisions for retraining in other industries
That is where the ATAI will come in.
