Forgot I cant use the project section
Well lads a crazy bit of work in the last few days, gearboxes and rear diffs out of both the Impreza and Celtic's leggy. Had a problem with rear drive shafts matching up so looked into more and was talking to a trader on Scooby net that has experience with rear diffs and transmissions in genral.
So basically the 98 sti has a 4.4 final drive and the Legacy a 4.1, plan was to fit the box and whole rear diff and shaft from the legacy. That clearly wasnt going to work as the shafts are slight longer and not as thick as the Impreza's.
To sort the Final drive and shaft problem the solution was to remove the leggy's rear diff ring gear (4.1) over to the Impreza's diff and fit the diff in the leggy's diff casing so the pinion match the ring gear. Thats all done now all I have to do is drop the diff into somewhere to set the backlash clearance so that the diff is not overly noisey, or wear prematurely.
He's a a few pics:
New Box
Stripping the diffs legacy on the left and wagon's on the right
Legacy Diff
Impreza diff
Ring gear from impreza
Ring gear removed from the Impreza diff
Impreza ring gear with 40:9 Stamped into it , divide 9 into 40 you get 4.44
Legacy Ring gear with 37:9 stamped into it, divide 9 into 37 you get 4.11
Impreza diff with legacy ring gear fitted
Diff then fitted to leggy casing
