Forester overheating.

Hey lads.
Got the timing belt do on the forester about 3 week ago at my uncles garage and the lad doing it said everything was fine but he mentioned that there was a lot of pressure in the top radiator hose, he said he had a good look around and everything was doing what it should, i was a bit worried/pissed of only done about 1000km since I bought the car in December. Did a bit a google as you do but it’s nothing seem to come up about the 2.0 having head gasket trouble (which I’m obviously wrong) So was driving to Galway last week and happened to look down at the temp gauge and it was up at the red. So pulled in straight away had a look at all the usual things and all ok. Let it cool down and check for water and what you know no water so filled up with what I had (a 1.5 liter bottle for drinking) and made for home. It would get hot and I’d let it cool down and eventually got home. Had to change cars and head for Galway again. So I resume the head gasket is gone. Got home that evening and filled and blead with water and gave it a bit of a drive. It drove perfect but when I got back home there was steam coming from the right head. I presume it gone? Could I be missing something? On ya there is a fairly new radiator in the car since before I bought it.

Any advise would be great. if it’s gone probably won’t go to the hassle of doing the heads have too many other project going on at the moment, would probably try and sell it if so.

2L were not common for head gasket no

But any abuse of a coolant system can cause one.

Example. Previous rad leaks. Rad pipe leaks etc. Were was leaking over extended periods and was only being topped up rather then sorted. Or where ran only on water etc.

Oh and steam in driver area wouldnt be from gasket. May be a leak of a pipe in that area such as turbo coolant return etc.

I see you also mention had a new rad prior to purchase. The old one could have been leaking over a long period and just being topped up.

I was thinking the 2.0 didn’t give much head gasket trouble. I’m 95% sure its gone. I was actually thinking the engine was the one thing that was bulletproof in the Subaru’s. Now next question is it worth doing. Presumably it’s a engine out job. Is it worth the hassle. (Ofcoarse it worth the hassle it’s a Subaru. Stupid question to ask on a Subaru forum) but really is is worth doing. Could possibly take the engine out myself and my uncle has the know how of what is above my head in getting it done. I’m getting the engine rebuilt on my m3 done at the moment and that’s above in Galway do iv enough going on I think. Next question as I answered the last. I’ll probaby sell car as is. What’s it worth? Iv a newly powered coated set of oz super leggeras copies which are a very nice wheel. It’s got wrk suspension and exhaust.

My 2006 2.5 turbo overheated back in 2016. The oil crossover cooling pipe had rusted through and that was that. Head gaskett went as soon as the temp needle hit the red. Sent the engine to a specialist firm in the midlands (uk) and they did a great job. Cost about £2200 I think (would need to check) but engine been running fine since. Cosworth gasket put in 1.5mm. Well worth it
