Alright lads,

So partner had lend of my e39 for a while and got call saying car was broke down in the back arse of nowhere ????
Flew up to her with 10litres of diesel as she said it could be out of it .

Put it into car turned key to get pump going , started car and headed back towards home .

Car stalled twice on trip back so filled her up along with bottle of redex and ran great for a while.

Now when it gets to a quarter of tank it hesitates and stalls

Anyone any ideas what problem could be ?

When was the diesel fuel filter changed last? Where do you usually get the diesel for that car?

I had a similar issue with my Focus diesel and changing the fuel filter resolved it. Also, not buying diesel from Tesco as the issue happened after exclusively buying fuel from them for over 6 months.

A clogged fuel line might be another possibility. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for replys ,

I've ordered fuel filter today from Bmw
Hasn't been changed in 20k miles
Only use Maxol for diesel
Hopefully this sorts it
Has ran great in two years of ownership
Prob best all round car I've ever had

When you are replacing the fuel filter see can you blow air through the filter shouldnt be hard but not easy either and compare to new one
Maybe theres air being drawn in to fuel system when it gets to a certain level of fuel causing it to cutoff?

If you cannot find a simple fix, filter, pump etc I had an X5 that was running out of diesel with a 1/4 tank left on the gauge.
Not sure if the e39 is same but the fuel tank is split in 2.
It has electric pump one side and returns it to the other and uses a Venturi to transfer the returned fuel to the pump side.
For reasons I could not find the Venturi was not working, leaving fuel on one side giving reading on the gauge and no fuel at the lift pump.
Replaced Venturi and pipes and all ok.

There's an in-tank pump under the rear bench, and there's also a low pressure pump under the passenger seat/footwell.

The low pressure pump will give up before the in tank. Change your filters for piece of mind. If problem persists check the fuel pump relay before buying new pumps.

If it's the in tank pump, buy from BMW. You may think it's a rip off, but most spurious supply pump only, whereas BMW supply pump and assembly.

Had same problem on a e46 years ago just over quarter of a tank start chugging what John ra is right check relays should be located in behind fuse panel need to unscrew fuse holder out of way but most likely it's aux pump. You could swap wiper relay to check if pump one is gone well that's what I did If main pump to engine was gone as you know there would be nothing I replaced mine with a Bosch unit from what I remember doing a lot of head scratching over it left it up to a garage his answer fill up when it gets to half tank I know a lad who specialises in BMW if you badly stuck I could root out number all the best with it
