I think the earlier engine is less prone to trouble
so was looking 2005 - 2006
before the engine was changed

Your right I remember Ciaran saying something about that

He is doing a few bits on the Subaru for me over the next few days I'll tell him your looking I think he knows of a few
His brother has one for sale I think but it's not the touring

ideally same spec with a Auto box but 2005/2006
manual is a waste of time in the 520 i think

Needs to be a Touring ,saloon better to sell id say the touring is hard enough sold but with the dog need a touring so figure M sport spec will let it on easier so it needs to be right spec as ill change it again in 12-18 months so need to buy right
If say to him be great
Thanks Keith much appreciated

Hi Colm,

Don't know of any cars for sale but just to add that I recently bought 525d m sport touring and the touring was far cheaper to insure than the saloon.
Saloon was gonna be 200 quid more than the legacy (renewed in April for 435), but i got a 40 euro refund on the touring. The 520d should be better again.

As a car, it's a big lazy cruiser. Auto and cruise control are great and the boot is massive. Unfortunately, I have the basic iDrive so no nav or bluetooth and bog standard audio system. It's absolutely pants. For a high end marque, it's actually shocking!

Thanks Peader for the info
yeah a mate has one and i drive it a few times a week for the last few months and love it
I was going to buy his one but the saloon is useless with a large dog so I need a touring
standard radio is rubbish your right there, they've always been a brand that charge for any extras but to be fair you do get some good upgrades on the m sport in other areas , but there a very functional car i find for day to day use and love the cruise control very handy going up or down 10km at a flick of the stalk
good to know about the insurance Thanks for the info

2008's would have the newer engine which seem to give issues with the timing chain and it is costly if it goes. Have read on forums of people getting them changed at around €1000 for peace of mind. So if going newer budget for that. Think the location of the chain makes them a laborious job to replace. Also check if the swirl flaps have been replaced or removed, these are in the inlet and can break off and worst case go into the engine and munch around in there, happened to my wife's friend in an E46. Have read mixed reviews on lads removing them, some say it makes no difference others say it affects power, emissions, etc. Other thing to check is there is a filter for oil to the turbo (think they call it the breather filter), that should be changed regularly but some miss this and can cause turbo failure. Not sure about the newer ones, but an issue on the older engines.

Also the estates can leak in the boot, so check for a dry boot. The E39's had self leveling suspension, not sure about the E61, but on the E39's the bags can fail, so check if it has it that it works (not sure how, one for Google).

Sorry do not want to put you off, just some things to check with them.

Thanks for that Jim much appreciated
Yeah I know about the timing chain issue and it been a engine out job
4k from main dealers and 1k from a independent I heard
so whatever I buy has to have the chain done with the upgrade one
still really in 2 minds on newer car cheap tax
or older reliable car big tax :wall:
problem is buy the one with big tax and when its time to move it on it will be hard sold as the cheaper tax ones will be more affordable bye then so your caught both ways really
nice 2008 one popped up on donedeal there i might go have a look at with all the right extras
chain done clutch done and 1 owner with full BMW service history so you would assume it would be looked after
so its ticking all the boxes
failing that probably one from the U.K. but I would be weary of rust

I'd go have a look at that one all the work is done
If it has had the new chain are you trouble free or will that chain become an issue in the future

If chain is done then I would be happy with it. Think I read somewhere that the problem lies with the tooth profile of the sprocket on the crank which is machined onto the crank, that causes them to wear over time, again not 100% sure on this.

But some chains never go, think it is just that it is a costly expense when they go that it gets a lot of heat on the net. So may only be a small percentage, saying that if I was buying one would do it if not already done for peace of mind. So if done not too long ago then would go for a look and I would not be worried about the chain. Just see why it was changed, was it as a precaution or did it fail.

I'm not sure Keith
Ill have to check up on it
if just done the car won't even see 6-7k miles a year when we own it so probably would only have 12-14k extra on it when we move it on
so I'd hope be fine :ponder2:

Looks like the problem here is not the car but the dog. Swap the dog for a chihuahua a get yourself a saloon M5 ;)

Your on the money there lol
Ah I couldn't he's my right hand man
Be lost without him
In my mini sitting in the back
Turns around looking out the back window at a dog and his tail is in the front hitting me in the head [emoji85]
