riddle me this, and riddle me that ,

a handyman is in a block of 100 brand new apartments ,
he has to put numbers on all the doors. 1,2,3 and so on
how many number 9's does he use ?

don is correct

for such an easy question , iv had great craic with this one. nearly everyone takes out the fingers to count on them , when that fails they usually get out the pen and paper to write it out . very simple to make a mistake ,lol

Thanks love those math brain twists.
From 9 to 89 you have it 9 times
Then from 90 to 100 - 11. The catch is that 99 has it twice.

more common mistake is for you not no include 90-98 . try it on friends and have a laugh

Here is a classic one to keep the thread going:

I saw a shirt for $97. I borrowed $50 from mom and $50 from dad. I bought the shirt with $3 of change. I gave $1 to mom, $1 to dad, and kept $1 for myself. Now I owe my mom $49 and my dad $49. $49+ $49=$98+my $1=$99. Where did the other $1 go?

$1 didn't go anywhere... it is an accounting question and not a maths / numbers problem.

You have assets and liabilities in an accounting context (which must balance each other out):
step 1 ($100 cash / $100 debt to parents)
step 2 ($97 shirt + $1 in your pocket / $98 owed to parents).

@Ross: thought the number was higher as thought you'd also count all the 6s (upside down 9) ;-)
