Boot spring / torsion bar removal / fitting

Lads, trying to replace the heavy STI boot torsion bar with a lighter WRX one as I had the big spoiler removed some time ago.

I did this once before on a blobeye wrx and found it an easy job... as per the manual you pull back the end from the boot lid arm, flip the little swivel bracket and release the tension and the wrx one is loose enough to slide out.

The issue I'm having is that the STI bar, even with the swivel tension bracket released flat, is still pressing with such force on the boot lid arm that I cannot shift it... well not safely anyway and don't feel like the bar taking the head off me when it uncoil itself in an uncontrolled way. The manual shows a "special" tool, but from the way it looks it is just a bar with some slots in it to keep the tool in place so it doesn't slip off the bar as you torque the end back to undo the swivel bracket.

Anyone any suggestions how to take this off safely (and easily)? thanks!
