[h=2]Pass rates & Statistics[/h]When testing was first introduced, less than 4% of vehicles passed at the first attempt compared to over 76% in 2012 for cars that are four years old. This figure falls to around 50% for eight-year-old cars and 40% for vehicles of nine years old.
[h=3]Main Fail Items[/h]The top five fail items in 2013 were as follows:

  1. Front Suspension
  2. Tyre Condition
  3. Brake Line/Hoses
  4. Stop Lamps
  5. Steering linkage

Not surprised at the Galway result. The roads are extremely hard on suspension and tires. I find myself weaving sometimes to avoid big holes and dips but my bumper payed the price recently. At the moment, my entire village is being dug for water pipes so whenever I want to go anywhere, it's a hard ride.

Looking at the info above very very briefly, one in every two cars fails the NCT first time.... scary shtuff that

not really, ppl often go to NCT the first time, to be told what to replace, then they replace just that.

Also, not removed Wheel caps, broken bulb etc will chunk huuuuge part of those as well. Those data, while interesting, are completely useless.

yeah thats a good point
a lot of people just throw them in just to get the fail sheet
its usually cheaper than getting a load of stuff done that may not be necessary

just because the guy in the nct center doesn't cop some stuff doesn't mean there might not be necessary repairs needed. they only have a limited amount of time to check car. some testers don't care much of what they do, other's are just plain bad at what they do, anybody can be distracted and miss something. but there are some very vigilant testers also, this is what makes it so awkward when doing pre nct's. i could give a list of nct failable's and might not fail on any. on the other side i just put i tie rod into a car that failed the test, very minimal wear on it. but when i looked at the failure sheet a bigger story became evident, wheel caps not removed, baby seats still covering seatbelts, if you piss them off they'll find something!

biggest shocker with those stats are the amount of fail dangerous retest fails, i'd like to think they where all joe soapers just giving it a go at repairing it and sticking it back through.

in all honesty, when they gave me back my corsa with several faults, I have personally addressed only the major ones, kept few things as they were, it passed on retest, they didnt even lift the car, even though one of the CV boots was not tightened, so they didnt even check that one...

NCT is a joke, but good way how to get money out of ppl and keep several hundred jobs for some...
