Hello all

I'm new to the site but have browsed on and off over the years.

I been driving some form of scooby for the last 12 years or so. Managed to have my wife driving a 2.5 turbo forester for a while too. Anyway I've been driving a sti hatch for the last 5 years or so and fancy a change. First choice would be a 2014my sti but can't do the tax, I've tried to talk myself into it but the differential compared to other options is just too much(2350 compared to 570)
The only obvious choice is the golf r which seems very well priced for what it is. Much prefer a scooby for reliabilty and kerb appeal but golf seems a good drive.

I know the focus rs is coming to and could be interested depending on the sticker price but golf seems better value.

So what would you do? Ideally hoping someone will tell me how I can keep sti tax for around 1k!

Any ideas welcome.

Paul

Hi Paul drove a Mk7 R recently and it makes some case for it'd self seriously quick car and easy to live with

Pitty the new Sti tax is so mentol wonder how much the new er Sti would be reg here too

Know there's a dealer up north that's sold a few

The Golf R got a big price reduction a while ago when I was looking at them for a family member think it was 48 Euro Dsg box

Wish you luck but just dont think the Numbers stack up for new newish Scoobys for a while here now

Not bad the only downfall is its a golf I know it would be a good quick car and easy tax etc but fu*k they are boring I don't think I could get out of a scooby and into a golf, the rs on the other hand has a slightly nuts side to it much more Street cred in my opinion, it will also hold its value as it's an Rs and has a cult following

I dont agree about the golf being a better car than the focus, as good maybe but definitely not better

Paul if it was me in your position.....

I'd go golf R.
But manual version not DSG.

Serious piece of kit with an up to date/modern 300bhp!

Absolute weapon of a car when driven in anger.
Turn in is amazing on them.

Only other car I've driven with similar turn in is an evo6 TM...

If you get a chance drive a manual R in anger, very capable car on the twisty stuff.
Big warranty so no issues to worry about.

A manual golf r 5 door new starts at about 42k cash. Good price compared to cost of one in the uk. There's a good few of them around and it's possible to pick up a demo in the dsg anyway
The 571 reg isn't me. Mine is charcoal grey, it was registered in June 2008. It's lives around rathfarnham area.

Iv driven a golf r and a focus st which is the same chassis as the new rs minus 4x4 and id take an st over a golf r, but that's just my preference

On the re sale value.....

Nothing sells better than a VW!!
Or holds its value...

Maybe an RS 500 or escort cosworth .....
R will make good money and I bet more than the RS focus in the long run.

This is the real drawback. The gokf looks ok but going from an sti to a golf just seems wrong

Your blinded by old hat tech from The blue oval!!! :)
When you tell me about the new focus RS experience I'll listen.

The R is an animal In manual form....
Not much out there to touch it on the twisty stuff... Except my Impreza :)

Seriously though it's a super machine and I hate VW stuff!!
R400 if it's made Would be a game changer totally...

@graham focus rs cars are trading for 18-23 k in the UK they were only 25 k new in 2010 so that agreement doesn't stand up really

@turbopaul that's my point, yes the golf will be a great car but when walk out of your house to go for a spin will you be happy getting into a golf after having the sti????
