So, from what I have read, he decided to step down, now it might as well be, he was forced to throw the towel in... either way, unless he has some anger management issues, I believe it was done on purpose. As far as I have read on internetz(must be true, right?) if he left on his own that he didnt want to do that any more, he would not get anything, if they sack him, his contract protects him to get quite nice amount of moenys

Well, you need to remember, that he plays a persona for the TV and Show. Controversy pulls attention. Being Racist is 'cool' nowadays, in terms of controversy.
 
If it was any other job and you punched your workmate you would get the sack totally his own fault the BBC couldn't really do anything other than sack him.
