Track day car

Time flies. Great progress. Have you thought back them how far you gonna go?

Back then I had no notion of ever actually racing this car. My first track day left me just wanting more.
I love the challenge of building the car and love the challenge of racing it, so the bug has well and truly bitten me:)

Tonight I managed to get a few hours back working on the car. I had lost a little interest as I was so busy and just couldn’t find time. I got stuck in and started on the rear camber/extension kit.

For fitting these you need to completely strip down the hubs to the stub axel. This axel wasn’t as hard to remove as I thought and with some help from the blue spanner and me lump hammer, it was off!

Next part was to cut the first step on the arm to allow the new axel bolt on. This is a different setup and bolts on rather that press in. You can see the setup below.

That’s pretty much it sorted now. I’ll have to stick back on the hubs later as I want to cheap them all up and put in fresh grease. I’ll also fit new rear discs as the ones on this suffered some damage from loosing a few pads in the past.

I also started removing all old fuel lines and getting all the sound deadening off the floor. Again the blue spanner and paint sc****r got the job done no hassle. I’ll definitely need to spend more time inside prepping for the paint job before I finish fuel system.

That’s pretty much it for the moment.

Got my rear camber kit finished last night. Looks much better now as the extra 25mm track now fills the wheel arch’s.
Hopefully this little job helps me carry a lot more speed where needed. While at it I cleared out all the old grease from the bearings and got some fresh stuff in along with new rear brake discs.
Next job I need to really attack is painting the inside of the car as it’s holding me back from finishing the fuel cell and all new braided lines. Not looking forward to this one but I may soon get stuck in..

Not a project update but just letting ye know that Leinster Trophy coverage will be on Eir Sports next Friday night at 7:00pm

Loads of great racing action and all very well put together by Irish Motorsport TV.
I’ll share it here as the car features in this with Future Classics.

This evening I got some more work done on the rear breaks. After having no luck with decent second hand calipers, I ended up buying one new and getting a refurb kit for the other.

I had to make up a new copper nickel line for this side as the connection was badly damaged.

The driver side was in rag order and badly needed refurbishment. Got a nice wee kit with all new seals and piston.

Nasty looking thing..

WD-40 grinder and wire brush left it almost like new.

Hopefully this will help with the uneven rear brake pulling I was suffering from[emoji106]

Caliper came up well  a consistent brake pedal will improve Times and confidence aswell  There’s nothing as frightening as late braking into a corner and the pedal going to the bulk head :eek7::icon_grin:

Cheers Joe I done the front ones last year and it made a huge difference. Been meaning to get the rears done for a while now. Stopping is important and will be even more important next year[emoji23]

Another little job done last night. This is always something I know I always needed to do but always put off until I got around to painting inside the car. These are Group 4 gussets sourced from Murray Motorsport. Quite time consuming to cut into place and weld but I know it’s worth the hassle. I’m never happy with my welding but I’m pretty happy it’s mostly adequate. Since the below photos I have done some smoothing down as I want them to blend into the bars as best as I can. This is definitely function over form, but definitely looks more race car[emoji28]

Last little job before spraying inside the car, was to fit some extra strength to the roll cage. This was done on the advice received from another driver that had done it on his own car and seen great results.
This extra bar on both sides should really reduce and flex in the back axel. I may actually do a small bit of seam welding too[emoji51]

After many hours masking off the car and rubbing down paint, I put on 2 coats of white primer and 2 coats or day glow yellow. After that it got 2 coats of clear lacquer. Next up it?s time to mask up the finished cage and Clean down the rest or the car for it?s new black finish.
I?m using black 2 pac paint for the inside as I was advised it would be best.

Once I get this all finished I can focus on finishing the fuel cell, pump and new lines.

Pump and filter kit will mount under the tank. This will save room inside and leave as little as possible for me to build a firewall.

Tonight I got the black paint sprayed inside. I used 2 pac paint for this, it?s my first time using it so hopefully it?s all ok. I?m looking forward to getting all the masking off to have a look[emoji1696]

Internal paint job done and dusted.. Now I can move on with getting this back together. Black will be hot in the summer but I?ll put up with that just to be different:)
Still need to do the boot lid and doors but that?s not holding up progress on finishing the fuel system and getting her cranked again.

Another leap forward this evening! Got my fuel cell into its final resting place. Once that was done I needed to find somewhere to to mount the new fuel pump. Luckily being an electrician I found some cable tray and unistrut in the garage which made a very handy bracket.
The pump now fits neat under the tank and I can start running new braided lines.
There will be a flat section running under this which should keep everything safe from debris.

Cheers!

Would have loved to have done all this kinda stuff from the start but the budget was never there. I?m kinda building as I can afford while using as much scrap as I can find around the garage:)
