Another little progress update!
This weekend I got down to The Mondello Park 50th anniversary Historic Race meet. We had two demo races on the Sunday with an absolutely packed 35 car grid!
Leading up to this I planned on prepping the car for max output and getting good tyres on, just to see what the car can really do.
I fitted new front CL RC-5 pads as my old CL’s where pretty much at the end. These are amazing pads and I just wouldn’t use anything else or recommend anything else if your racing or even doing a lot of track days..
So myself and Dec strapped on a set of Yokohama AO50 tyres and raised the rev limit to its max as there was no barrier time. This was my first time to ever run the car to 7800 rpm.
I measured the fuel so not to carry much or any unwanted weight. I got some race fuel from a mate and we done a 70/30 mix so 5 litres of race and 10 litres of petrol.
Unfortunately the practice session Sunday morning was wet and also cut short due to an off at south side corner. This left me with no scrub on tyres or pads.. But lucky enough I got a good pull in the lotto grid and got pole in super class for race 1. This put me at the very front of 35 cars[emoji28]
I got great launch off the line and may have pulled ten car lengths by turn 2.. Straight away I knew the car was responding well to all the changes and the grip was amazing from the AO50 rubber. As the cars disappeared in my mirror I just put the head down and went into Time Attack mode. Can’t believe how well the car felt and the times felt effortless, all be it I was feeling the extra grip in my arms. I could see from Harry’s Lap Timer I was in low 2’s so this encouraged me to keep pushing.
Eventually I crossed the line for the win a long way ahead of the pace, so much so I was genuinely shocked!
I really expected the top 5 or so Cars to be a lot closer giving their experience and knowing the cars.
After looking back on times I spotted I done a 2:00.8 which I surly didn’t think a little 1.6 was capable of. But most of all my times were consistent and this made my quite pleased that things seem to be coming together nicely.
I always dreamed of a sub 2:00 and now this is becoming a reality even on a threaded tyre. Dare I say there could be 56/57’s in car.. maybe!!
Some times from race 1 I did back off a little near the end and caught some back markers.
