Last night I got a got a chance to get back doing some work on the car. First job was to refill the gearbox with Titan Race LS90 gear oil, because I like starting with the handy jobs. I picked to some nice 78mm flexi pipe from Murray's yesterday which should be perfect for the cold air feed into the new air box.

I also got back to work on the air box and started making the back plate and top plate.

    Fits like a glove
The top plate was handy to make but I'll fit some nice hinges do I can easily open it for inspection or removal.

All that's left now is to fit hinges and make up two side panels. I have a 83mm hole saw which will be the perfect size for the hose pipe. Coil and FPR will be relocated at a later stage. I was chatting one of the guys in itcc and he recommended wrapping the box with battery insulation to keep heat out, sounds like a good idea
I'll have to make something for the bumper to collect as much cold air as possible. I might use some 3mm foamex for this as I have loads left over from making door cards.

Didn't update I a while but since the last update I have completed my throttle bodies air box. Lots of work involved but I'm happy with the result.

Best place to take air supply for now was the head light! I kinda got lucky as the hole for the head light was the exact size for the 78mm pipe. As you can see I wrapped the pipe with aluminium heat reflective foil tape. This should help keep heat out and keep inlet temps down.

The air box itself is completely wrapped with stick on sound deadening padding sourced from top part in mullingar. This should act as an insulator and help keep the air cool. As the padded was black it also got wrapped with the heat reflective foil. Thankfully it still sounds good and didn't completely muffle out that throttle bodies noise

This is the sound deadening padding going on. Really nice material and very cheap. I was surprised with how well it actually stuck to the aluminium.

Just don't a small test run since fitting and everything feels good. Really looking forward to the track day on the 25th now and see if all my latest efforts have been worth while

Cheers Joe Definitely get ya out for a few laps man. Think I'll have a little shake down first. There is an MEC rally sprint on next weekend in Mondello so I'm thinking I might enter for the crack

So before the track day on the 25th I'll be taking the Saxo down to Mondello for the MEC Rally sprint on Sunday. It's on all weekend but I'll be just doing the one day. The car should be ready to rock but I feel it still needs a wee map tweak. Hopefully everything go's ok and I find have to fix anything before the track day.

Looks like a great weekend always some great machines knocking around sprints.
Hope all the latest upgrades help

Some onboard from Friday, car went great all day thank god as last year I had early retirement with a gearbox issue. Friday I think I was the last car on track as I was trying to give as many passengers including my brother plenty of laps

that rear camera angle is class
yourself and that civic and the other EK coupe were fairly honkin around the track, mondello seems to suit the lighter more agile cars

That's a class pic Gus We had a great few laps! Yes most say the FWD NA cars are pretty well suited around Mondello as it's such a technical track. It's a pity I didn't have a second camera as it would have been a cool overlay

    Cool Gus thanks
Yes power is noting without a little control. Myself and Dec have worked hard at both of our cars trying to get them cornering well. My driving was a little rusty early in the day but I got the eye in better later on. So many changes done since last year I'm only getting to grips with the car again. Thanks for the photos man great shots

    Track day car

Been very busy since the track day trying to get a few issues sorted for the final rounds of ITCC at the Leinster Trophy. Very last minute I had the car ready but could only manage 3rd in race 1 due to more issues with power loss. It was so bad I could not make race 2.
Thankfully today the problem has been sorted. After checking all the electrical parts it was down to testing the injectors. I dropped In with martin Tracey and the pictures speak for themselves

After fitting new filters and ultra sonic cleaning they are now 100%

This is an issue I have had since doing the throttle bodies. I have everything back together this evening and the car seems a lot smoother. I'll have to take the car back to get the fuel map checked as the flow rate should be dramatically increased. I can only hope this has fully resolved the misfire and power loss issues. I have fitted new fuel filter and I'll also be changing plugs and crank sensor next just to be sure.
One of my favourite pics from Sunday

    Track day car

    Latest little progress update.
Since the final round of the ITCC championship I have had to do very little with the car but have some plans for over the winter. One thing I did notice is that my front calipers were very stiff and I was getting it hard to even push the car around the garage. I removed the calipers and completely stripped them as they were well due an overhaul.

The pistons were perfect so I fitted all new seals and rubbers, this is a job I’ll definitely be doing with the rear over the winter as it’s cheap easy and effective.

The next outing for the Saxo was the RSA Rallysport Sprint on the 4th of November. I picked up a second hand set of Yokohama wets for this as the weather looked like a good chance it would be wet.

Huge thanks to Dec again for getting the tyres on my spare rims. As always his help is invaluable all year and to be honest it nearly wouldn’t be possible to get on track without all his help. I love this sprints and could not recommend them more for anyone who wants to start some competitive track time. The RSA regulations are very relaxed and sensible and the events themselves are quite affordable.
I headed down on the Saturday morning and the the conditions were near perfect nice and dry but a crisp breeze. The paddock was absolutely buzzing with around 160 cars getting ready to do battle. Some amazing machines including an absolutely mint Saxo Super 1600 see below

And also this totally bonkers and equally amazing mark 2 Escort.

We got ready for our first stage run around 10:30 and it was dry so went with the best dry setup I had. I used old used AO48 tyres that myself and Dec had sourced from one of the Fiesta ST race guys. I knew they would be hard to get heat in over the two lap run from cold but it was all I had. So after 3 stages things were looking good and a was gradually improving even with the second lap of stage 3 being wet I had matched my dry time from run 1 and more importantly I was holding my own with the Super 1600 and sitting overall 56th out of 160 and 7th in class 4 with 40 cars.

I was secretly hoping for rain as that would mean the 70/80 bhp advantage in some of the other cars would be leveled and I could push hard with the wets on. My prayers were answered for stage 4 as the rain came in quite heavy and I could see some cars struggling on semi slicks. I got back to the service area and threw on the wets and set on my way. Before getting to the start line I gave the tyres a little spin up “as ya do” but caught a little more grip than i expected which gave the engine and box quite a jerk! Almost straight away I knew damage was done as the car was very hard to control and the steering was pulling left down the straights. I finished the run all be it quite slow and got back to the service area. It was then I noticed I had broken the top gearbox completely off the casing and had lost quite a bit of oil. That was essential game over and completely my own fault. I pushed hard all day but just pushed the car to its limit and beyond. It’s an easy fix and one that’s already underway as I have a spare casing sitting on the shelve.

You can see the broken bolt hole and 4th gear

The car is going to get a full inspection now and get the box sorted and back in over the next few weeks. I plan to do the next RSA Sprint down at Pallas karting on the 30th of December.

I was very happy with how the car ran Saturday and definitely punched above it’s weight. Still lots to do as ever this car is work in progress and only ever limited by budget. In time I know I can really make this car proper quick and keep improving as a driver myself.

Here is a clip from stage 2 it was dry but the grip just wasn’t there with oil and dirt on the track from the first stage.

Great work as always A dose that the casing broke but least it’s a cheap fix and lesson learned on hard launches 🚀

    Cheers man!
Yes I need to learn the cars limits. But the plan is to get someone to bridge the three bolt holes not with some tig welding. Make it stronger
