Another little progress update!
This weekend I got down to The Mondello Park 50th anniversary Historic Race meet. We had two demo races on the Sunday with an absolutely packed 35 car grid!
Leading up to this I planned on prepping the car for max output and getting good tyres on, just to see what the car can really do.
I fitted new front CL RC-5 pads as my old CL’s where pretty much at the end. These are amazing pads and I just wouldn’t use anything else or recommend anything else if your racing or even doing a lot of track days..
So myself and Dec strapped on a set of Yokohama AO50 tyres and raised the rev limit to its max as there was no barrier time. This was my first time to ever run the car to 7800 rpm.
I measured the fuel so not to carry much or any unwanted weight. I got some race fuel from a mate and we done a 70/30 mix so 5 litres of race and 10 litres of petrol.
Unfortunately the practice session Sunday morning was wet and also cut short due to an off at south side corner. This left me with no scrub on tyres or pads.. But lucky enough I got a good pull in the lotto grid and got pole in super class for race 1. This put me at the very front of 35 cars[emoji28]
I got great launch off the line and may have pulled ten car lengths by turn 2.. Straight away I knew the car was responding well to all the changes and the grip was amazing from the AO50 rubber. As the cars disappeared in my mirror I just put the head down and went into Time Attack mode. Can’t believe how well the car felt and the times felt effortless, all be it I was feeling the extra grip in my arms. I could see from Harry’s Lap Timer I was in low 2’s so this encouraged me to keep pushing.
Eventually I crossed the line for the win a long way ahead of the pace, so much so I was genuinely shocked!
I really expected the top 5 or so Cars to be a lot closer giving their experience and knowing the cars.
After looking back on times I spotted I done a 2:00.8 which I surly didn’t think a little 1.6 was capable of. But most of all my times were consistent and this made my quite pleased that things seem to be coming together nicely.
I always dreamed of a sub 2:00 and now this is becoming a reality even on a threaded tyre. Dare I say there could be 56/57’s in car.. maybe!!

Some times from race 1 I did back off a little near the end and caught some back markers.

That car is just unreal, it really is. An absolute credit to you. 2 minute lap as you said in a 1.6 car is amazing. Well done!

Been fun getting is this far.. definitely more in it and definitely sub 2’s with these tyres. Move on to slicks with a few other small tweaks and who knows!!

Well done Adrian  Some improvement in times :clap:

So for all the novices drivers out there what’s being the best mod or best upgrade to the car ,or has it being all the little tweaks are starting to add up and pay off , Or is it down to the seat time and laps around the place that brings the time down or a combination of all of them .

Sorry for the long question but I think lads would like to know:thumbsup: as you have being there

Cheers Joe[emoji106]

This may need to be a long winded answer..:)
I guess in order of importance I’ll have to start with..

Track Time:
Definitely in order to learn your car and track you must be willing to put in the miles. Not only just lapping aimlessly but actually studying what’s going on. Always time your session as best you can, this can sometimes be difficult at track days so patience needed with slower cars. Patience will probably be something your going to need a lot along the way, so before you start make sure you have it[emoji6]

Suspension/traction/brakes:

I’ll bunch these together as I feel they are all equally important. When you feel you have got to the very bottom of your original setup, and now want to bang in big laps you will need the above three.
The lighter your car is the less you may need to spend on these! Worth taking note of that while picking, or thinking about a build..
I found upgrading these areas gave me huge confidence in the car. Someone once said to me..”good brakes let you go faster for longer” funny no reference to actually stopping the car[emoji4] I liked the advice and it’s a great way to sell it. Don’t use road pads on track, they will be your friend and then try kill you later in the day. I use CL RC-5+ or RC 6 the difference is non comparable to a standard pad or even the likes of EBC yellow muck..
Suspension in a nutshell is crucial! Good setup is what allows you to carry that speed through the corners, dials out under and oversteer and just keeps the car stable. If a car is pushing the nose around the track especially Mondello you won’t find times and will kill your tyres. On the traction end of things it gets expensive, but good 2nd hand parts can be got. Good track tyres and an LSD will put the icing on the cake in this department.
You don’t have to do all this in one big package, but it’s hard to talk about one without reference to the other in my opinion.

Power:
We all want this one but for a long time it’s not actually that important! If you think of power it’s only what gets you from corner to corner a little quicker. If you focus your time and effort on the first two, adding extra power after will just join the dots. Big power without Track time, setup, traction & brakes will only end in frustration as small well setup cars wiz past you.
Do these bits in progressive steps and study track lines from onboard’s. Get good advice from people you trust, I always had Dec by my side for advice and it definitely helped. Be careful with some advice from paddock experts..use you filter well[emoji4]
On that note.. drive her on and have fun[emoji6]

Race 2 from Leinster Trophy at the weekend.
Started P1 and set the car up soft with ballast and dropped rpm for the barrier time. I got a great start and planned to pull a gap and try maintain it for the race. Some oil down on turn 3 seen me spin out into the kitty litter. By the time i restarted the car the whole grid had passed. Now plan B was to relax and forget about the barrier and just get to the front again. The car felt strange pushing hard on such a soft setup but added a little fun..
After a few laps i manage to get back at the front but with a fair amount of time penalty's [emoji25]
Think i officially placed second last which i was impressed with as i think i had around 50 seconds of penalty's[emoji23]

Ya it was good crack in that race. Time to move on from Future Classics now with this car. It’s gone too quick and I can’t slow it for the barrier anymore. Sub 2:00 is the plan for next year and hopefully run in some form of ITCC for 2019.
I’m not concerned about not being fast enough for Honda’s, I just want to race flat out.
