Chris Atkinson has been taken to hospital after crashing the Subaru Impreza WRC he shares with co-driver Stéphane Prévot on the opening Walters Arena spectator leg of Wales Rally GB, having received a knock on the head in the impact.

The pair headed into the stage – numbered seven but in reality the fifth of the rally following the cancellation of both runs through Hafren – lying in sixth position, 25.8 seconds shy of leader Jari-Matti Latvala. The only one of the day's tests due to be run to its original format in view of the treacherous weather conditions, the 2.29km sprint nevertheless began in heavy rain and under spotlights in the pitch black.

On the first corner of the stage – a flat-out left-hander just 180 metres in – the #6 car rolled and subsequently caught fire. Though neither Atkinson nor Prévot were seriously injured, they are undergoing precautionary medical checks.

“Both are out of the car and have been taken away by ambulance,” revealed Subaru World Rally Team spokesman Tom Tremayne. “They were both reported as okay by the ambulance crew, and they have been talking to us over the radio.

“Chris was airlifted to hospital after receiving a knock on the head, so he has been taken in for observation.”

Following the accident, the stage was stopped and the day called, leaving the crews to return to Swansea for the end-of-day service.

the car was in bits. i don't know if it was cut or what but you could see plenty of cage from the outside and that usually aint good. i felt sorry for spectators at the first stage cause it was cancelled twice and it didn't look like it was warm there

Just been watching it there on Dave and i'm not too up on WRC rules but how come they weren't allowed use the Studded ice/snow tyres if there was ice on a lot of the stages on the first day.??

only aloud 2 types of tyre per rally and are decided the day of the rexi as far as i know, and holy sh*t how did chris get out of that car alive thats one of the worst ways iv seen a rally car in a long time, fair play to those roll cages

he was very lucky the car was absolutely totaled the last time i seen a rally car as bad was solberg in germany after hitting a tank block

cheers for the clip brian, how is chris now. didnt he go to hospital with a bang on the head, by the looks of things they were very lucky, did the cage collapse?
