Alright I'm new to the site people but have basically signed up as I hope to have as my next car an STI Type R. I just need something a bit more sensible and comfortable to drive everyday as I just cant afford to have two cars anymore. So I'd be very interested in doing a deal for a type R (preferably black) but all Part exchanges considered. So heres my add:

I never thought it would come to this but sadly I have to put my pride and joy up for sale. Reasons outside my control force a very regrettable sale. I'm a huge AE86 enthusiast and this is my second levin, but most certainly wont be my last as I'll definately get one again in the future.

Its a 1984 AE86 Levin fitted with the bulletproof low mileage 20v Blacktop 4A-GE from a 98 Levin BZR (rather than standard 16v) imported to Ireland from Japan 1yr ago (was a demo car for a tuning company). I purchased the car back in April and I have to say that the car continues to put a huge smile on my face every time I drive it. No expense has been spared in maintaining and servicing the car, and every part purchased has been of the highest quality as can be seen in the spec list and receipts.

It handles and drives superbly, and a laptime of 1.06 on the Mondello National Track (with a complete novice at the helm) is a huge testiment to that. I have taken the car to 2 trackdays and also at Japfest, and on each occasion (as some members on here can testify to, as witnesses or passengers) the car not only performed very well but also never gave me even one problem, even with a round trip to Galway in the same day.

In my opinion the sound of a high-reving N/A car with individual throttle bodies is as good as it gets, and with the combination of good power, the TRD gearset and the 4.8 Final drive it certainly is far from slow.

I have an everyday car also which I use to travel to work/college so the Levin has generally been stored in the garage, and only taken out on special occasions.

Cheers lads! I have to say that although I like alot of cars with a passion, like Rx7s, Skyline GTRs, and even STI Type Rs, I dont think I'll ever love a car as much as an AE86. And its good to see I'm not being shunned anyway lol:D! I actually drove this into the carpark (absolutely filthy at the time) where all the ISDC crowd were gathering before Japfest. Never felt so out of place lol!! But the club looked very organised and well run.

It was imported by Pro Imports in Kerry, and went for pretty ridiculous money to be honest origionally.

And alot added to it since then. I have a project thread of all the parts (with pics of them in their boxes) on other forums, which I can show to any prospective buyer as proof. Most of the parts have not even 1,000 miles on them I'd say. Also the interior looks a good bit better lol:D, that red steering wheel :new_2gunsfiring_v1:

Ya dont need to tell me mate! I came on here first and did a search for a black type R. See one for sale that looked perfect, and as I'm scrolling down I see he'd like a jap RWD. I also did a search for AE86s to see ppls opinions of them and I came across a topic about which car you'd buy if you had 20k. I then see paul v4 post up a pic of a cam which is near identical to mine. Its a silver over grey with the same kit as mine (also sold my Pro Imports), but with only standard enough spec otherwise compared to mine (it had standard engine etc.). So I think its fair to say that theres a good chance he would have liked mine. Both cars selling for similar price, so a deal surely could have been done. Of course I then see that its sold, which was followed by about 20 F words in a row from me!!:(

Do yourself a big favour and don't sell it. You will regret it forever and you wont get one as good as the one you have. I have regretted selling 2 of my old cars and in hindsight I should have kept them as track day cars or just Sunday cars. If you can afford to hang on to it, do, because you will get the Subaru you want at half the price you expected to pay if you have no trade and cash. DONT SELL IT. You know it makes sense.

This is really crossing through my mind actually. Starting to have second thoughts. Its just I'm in my final year of college. I've spent all my money I've earned I'd say on cars and yet everyday I arrive into college in a piece of shit Almera!! Its just really annoying me now. The plan was to enter Time Attack next year in this but with no job and alot of work to do in college I just realistically wont have the funds to. I also plan to go to Australia when I qualify (loads of jobs for civil engineers there supposedly) so will have to sell then anyway to pay for it, so I cant really justify keeping it. Would just like to have a nice car now that I can drive everyday without worrying about it too much, or where I park it etc. Something a bit more subtle and comfortable I suppose. But at the same time I'm a huge AE86 head and it will be a long time I'd say before I get another one like this spec, so I know I will regret that I didnt just bite the bullet and bear with the Almera lol! Decisions decisions!

@Paul V4: It seems I cant pm ppl as I'm not a full member? Anyway I'm really more after a Type R to be honest. I like the idea of the short ratio gearbox, forged engine, and especially the two doors. Plus that little bit more of an image about them IMO. However your STi does look nice in fairness. But I know if I went for it I'd always be thinking I should have got a type R. Its just I'm really looking to go for this kind of a look, although maybe I'm just dreaming:

Although of all the px's I've been offered it is the most tempting. Could you pm us some more info, specs, and what sort of deal you have in mind? Plus where is your type R now? If you leave your email address maybe, I could reply to you that way as I cant PM as not full member...................yet :subaru:

I'll give this a bump. Getting plenty of P/x offers from on here and other sites but still no type R :(. I'll consider everything but not going to commit to anything yet unless I'm really happy with the deal, as I still havent put the car up on carzone or the autotrader yet.
I'll add another pic but this really does have to be seen in person:

You should talk to John Newman Motors in Ashbourne, I know he really has a BIG soft spot for these. He used to rally one and he sold it years ago for a rally prepped RS2000 MK3 Escort, he said it was his worst decision ever. No harm in trying.

Well by comfort I mean relative comfort lol. A type R will be alot more everydayish than the AE86. But at the same time I want something that gives me a real thrill when driving (as the AE86 really does) and that can also be pretty fun/quick on track. Pauls STI is very nice but I'm gonna try and hold out a bit more before strongly considering a p/x deal as I havent really advertised the car much yet.

Is it the one in your avator! If so its exactly what I'm looking for. But anyway if your only looking for a cash deal and not to do a deal with my AE86 then I cant really do anything at the moment? Theres plenty of nice type R's about (although no black ones of yet:() thats not the problem, its trying to sell my own car to get the money to buy them that is. And dont want to put it on carzone/autotrader untill after my college exams in about a month (in final year so they're very important and I dont want to be answering the phone every second or travelling around the country).

Ha you never know, a spin in this I'd imagine could convert alot of ppl I'd say. I've done a 1.06 on the national track in Mondello and consistently 1.07s (with passengers) in only two outings, I'd be interested to see what kind of times Type-R's are getting to be honest, considering their twice the power. I think thats testiment to how good this actually handles considering it would be alot slower on the straights I'd imagine. I really am a die-hard AE86 man, and nothing I've ever been in or driven has converted me, although admitedly I've still yet to be in a STI Type R.

No modern car offers the same feel and response in my opinion, as a 900kg 9k revving AE86!!! :icon_pray: I imagine I'll love a type R, but I know for certain I will get another AE86 in the future when money permits, but maybe I'm just crazy! :cuckoo:

So your engine would take a turbo at 1.2 bar would it?

So your engine would take a turbo at 1.2 bar would it?

Was only a freindly joke mate! :new_puppy_dog_eyes: Obviously my N/A engine wouldnt take 1.2 bar boost as its not built for it, as similarly a Sti engine wouldnt take revving so high. I was just saying that while driving my car on track etc at those high revs the thought of engine failure would never cross my mind, whereas I'd imagine when driving a type R it would be at the back of any owners mind? But the 4AGZE 1.6 Supercharged Toyota engine could take that kind of boost as it has high comp pistons etc if you want a similar comparisson. I dont think anyone could argue that a 4AGE engine would be more reliable driven to its limits than an STI engine driven to its limits, both standard of course? But it was only a throwaway comment I made anyway. Didnt mean to offend or insult anyone! :icon_redface:

no offence intended just making a point..your talking about bullet proof toyota engines..how many gt4's have required rebuilds and they run a lot less power than an sti...your engine is hardly standard a standard cam would shit itself at 8000+ rpm..Toyota havent made an exciting engine in years apart from the vvt-i engine from the celica which at 100bhp per litre hardly sets the world alight(lexus aside and the 5.0 litre v8 in the isf)
In fact toyota bought a 23% stake in Subaru with the intentions of using their engines and drivetrains in the next Celica.

no offence intended just making a point..your talking about bullet proof toyota engines..how many gt4's have required rebuilds and they run a lot less power than an sti...your engine is hardly standard a standard cam would sh1t itself at 8000+ rpm..Toyota havent made an exciting engine in years apart from the vvt-i engine from the celica which at 100bhp per litre hardly sets the world alight(lexus aside and the 5.0 litre v8 in the isf)
In fact toyota bought a 23% stake in Subaru with the intentions of using their engines and drivetrains in the next Celica.

Misunderstanding I feel. I said I'd miss a bulletproof toyota engine, as in mine (or in general 4AGE's) and not every Toyota engine. I'm sure most ppl on here have seen twincams being bounced off the limiter (very near 8k) for long periods of time while doing "rings" etc. in real or on youtube:icon_cry:. And considering at that stage the engine probably has 200k+ miles on it, I think its fair to say they can withstand a very large amount of abuse. Considering alone the amount of Sti engines on here which have been rebuilt compared to the amount of 4AGE's rebuilt over on AE86irl.com for example I think my statement stands up. And to be fair a twincam generally has a much harder life (considering being 20+ yrs old, and the amount of eijits who own them) than STIs. I'm obviously not saying its a better engine, I'm just saying its able to take alot more "hard" driving than an STI engine. But that is just a general fact in relation to N/A vs Forced Induction engines.

But anyway this is getting sidetracked. I'm just saying that I'll miss the reliability of a 4AGE thats all. Reliability is a negative of STI engines IMO as it is with most turbo cars, but I'm willing to take that negative for the many positives that they have (incresed power and subaru rumble :subaru:).

my ae111 levin with the 4AGE took a fair amount of abuse, quite often revving to 8k, only because you felt like you had had too though. it never once gave me problem,i would have thought in the scooby you acheive your peak power/torque at lower revs so theres no need to rev that high?

Peak power is something like 6400RPM

Okay just to maybe tempt ppl in and show them what this car is like to drive and sounds like I'll add a few videos. I have no decent ones of the actual car but I might make one.

Anyway the vids of the famous TRD Trueno owned by keiichi tsuchiya. Probably one of the most famous AE86s in the world. How are they relevant to my car? Well....

Both have the same 20v engine, toda cams, itbs, freedom ecu, trd gearset, final drive, trd suspension springs, trd blue shocks, and make very roughly the same power. However his makes that power on Jap fuel and mine makes it (without being fully mapped for it and so not making full potential) on 95 ron fuel.

However mine has better brakes, smaller wheels (14" rather than 15" so better for acceleration), wider wheels (so better for grip), much better tyres, lighter inside, lighter outside (fibreglass and carbon panels), roll cage (add rigidity aswell as safety), and much more suspension upgrades. If keiichi were to own my car and have time to set it up as well as his own then mine would be quicker.

So these vids are very relevant to my car and will really give you the best idea of what it would be like to own and drive it, although it wont make you as good a driver as him lol:D. Enjoy!

Firstly just having some fun and this will let you know what my car sounds like :icon_headbang::
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iDk3TEPgCA

Now to some races and first at home on the touge. Pretty much nothing beats it on the downhill touge (it has lost to JWRC Swift rally car though after winning countless challenges:(). Heres it is against a R34-GTR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Cq4XBt78c

Now it and another AE86 gang up on a R34-GTR V-Spec on the track. This is really impressive as its not on a downhill where power isnt as important:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhkpdr2_vfg

Against a civic Type-R:

And against an Integara Type-R (which in fairness doesnt seem to be set-up great):

Okay a big bump and a huge price drop. Now looking for 9,200 ono as going to Canada in June. Grab yourselves a real bargain. If you cant contact me on this, email me at Brian_egan@live.com.

Also the door was damaged from an attempted robbery (couldnt start it though cause of the kill switch). Its been fixed to stop rain etc getting in but hasnt been sprayed so is just in primer. Heres pics of the door as it stands, window trim (rubber etc.) havent been put back on in the pic, and its taken on a cold morning so condensation etc. Not really that bad:

Yep they sure do like big ends.. very dissapointed that some of you guys dont know this :naughty: :naughty:
Ae86 well known for them, easy to fit do.. not like a scooby :wall: trouble has followed the 1.6 engine through its whole life really, 20v suffer the same weakness.. but its not a major problem as they easy to do..

I would think that its unfair to say they love big end bearings Ive had 11 twincams and only 1 big end failure - and it was down to the oil pump packing up .... A lot of the problem is lads doing donuts in the one direction for an extended period.

That would be a great argument if the problem was only exclusive to AE86's...
But How would you explain it in front wheel drive Toyotas??? can hardly blame donuts???
I would find it hard to beleive that you have owned 11 Twin cams and only had 1 big end failure, except you were lucky enough that all had been recently replaced by a previous owner, which is quite possible considering there age.

I dont mean Toyotas as a whole - I had a celica with a 3SGE engine and the big ends went in that ... I also had an 88 supra 3.0 again - big ends went and 2 GT4's which both had big end failures!!! No defence there !

I would however stick up for the Toyota 4AGE engine - they are very reliable - obviously not bulletproof but a great durable engine that withstands mega abuse nonetheless.

I dont think its down to being lucky - Ive always maintained them with regular services and as most 4AGE engines are heading on for at least 20 years old at this stage obviously they have a thirst for oil and as AE86's and AE92's dont feature an oil light - its important to dip them regularly - Id be willing to bet that a lot of 4AGE big end failures are down to oil starvation.

il agree with some of what you said paddy  i cant say a bad word about twincams ,iv had 7 of them and only 1 gave me big trouble ,unlike sum other sports cars...
most of them get sum amount of stick and withstand it all :icon_pray: like all sports cars you can get a good and a bad ,i just dont like the way some people go round say'n sum cars are the best and unbrakeable ,an then turn round an say others do nothing but blow up...like iv had 4 sti's ,3 wrx's and a legacy ..all never gave me a bit of trouble ,3 evos ,1 of which went bang ..7 twincams and only 1 that gave trouble...if you have a good car to start with and look after it ,its half the battle...

KENC

Same here, im kinda fooked up of it to be honest, seems Subaru owners are the only ones who have to grin and bare people saying "Oh Subarus, sure they love bigends", but dare you say it about another make of car, every car ever made has some form of a bad point.
Paddy, your saying that the bearing problem in a Corrola could be from gobshites driving them, or previous gobshites low on oil etc etc.. sure that can be said for any car..
just because you look after it doesnt mean the previous owner has. So like a Subaru, and a Nissan etc etc Toyota suffer big end trouble aswell. there a great little car, take serious abuse but still have weak ponts.
Hope 2 many bubbles havnt been burst.

Yeah trixta's car is well gone. He sold it on to a guy, then 2 weeks later the car was on bricks with everything taken off it + engine too, in your mans driveway, dont know how they did it without noise but they did. your man got all the bits back in the end though i think!

Trixta is now driving a 91 FC RX7 and is up for sale at the minute too.
