call me daft but on motorway other day i noticed a faint noise i havent heard before on car it was like a whine noise off turbo as it came on boost only lasted 3/4 secs not noticed it before any ideas?? could it be the bearings in turbo by the way there is no smoke and it spools all the way to 21psi then holds at 17psi its a sti type r v3 also dont know if this has anything to do with it but the spring in my dump valve is really weak and lets out gas really easily??? could this be the cause of my new noise or is the turbo on its way out?? the turbo is a ihi vf23 roller bearing turbo. HELP PLEASE!!! ONLY TECKIES NEED APPLY!!!!!!!!

Its very hard to say Gerry. could be something really simple that caused it. if the noise isnt there anymore then you shouldnt worry about it. as long as your turbo is boosting fine and not smoking or making noise constantly then you can be sure theres nothing immediate wrong. i know that owning one of these cars causes worry at every little noise but its almost always nothing to worry about.
the best thing to do if in doubt is bring it to a specialist to get it checked after all theyre the experts.

cheers bud but i noticed today i can hear it between 3000rpm and 4000rpm then the exhaust drowns it out?? blitz nur spec for ya!! but yeah boost is fine and no smoke just that whine noise??

Yeah when i first got the scooby i was worried but it , kinda like an electic hum but got her checked out and it was just the turbo barely spoolin i was told . That was a year ago and never had any issues with it ( touch wood )

hi Gerry,

if you can hear the noise each time the turbo is spooling then im afraid its more than likely terminal. about 90% sure its cause the bushings inside the turbo that the shaft runs through are worn and causing the inlet or turbine wheel to rub the housings. Get it checked asap as what can happen in extreme circumstances is that a piece of the compressor wheel can break away and get sucked into the engine and basically destroy it.
by your 1st post i thought that you only heard the noise the one time.

George

oh no!!! yeah can hear it slightly in each gear for a sec or two?? but luckily i dont use it everyday just weekend,so what do you reckon it will cost am i better off upgradeing turbo to say a vf34 or 37 or somat as i still want roller bearing or what about td05 18g off andy forrest on exchange basis??? dont know what to do now???

hi Gerry,

1st things 1st go to a specialist and get it checked out to be sure its the turbo. obviously i cant look at it for you as your in the uk. if you want to upgrade the turbo id advise you to get the tdo5-18g instead of an ihi turbo as its much stronger. although depending on what power your aiming for and what mods you have a td05-big16g might be better. im out of stock of the 18g and big16's at the moment i only have 20g's in stock. also if your looking for one on exchane basis you must have a used td05 to exchange Andy or myself wont take ihi turbo's in xchange. As said before getit checked out 1stbefore rushing into anything.

not after big power it scares me now when it goes sideways!! would like 330ish who would you reccomend in uk then?? and what will i be paying for a new turbo?? can i not get mine took off and sent somewere ie to yourself to be reconditioned??? tbh i cant think of anything else it can be other than turbo as it makes sense its turbo coz it only does noise on spool up!!!

Gerry also worth thinking about is that there's alot more money and parts involved if you upgrade to a larger turbo that can flow more air and create more power. ECU Map etc etc. Not as simple as just banging on a larger turbo as a replacement and away you go.

I dont want to break the rules on traders posting commercial content outside there section but seeing as its all ready been done :D I have all those turbos here.

But if I where you id just get a standard replacement one from the UK OR if you want to PM me your location in England I may be able point you in the right direction. There are a number of Companies over there that will look after you very well and go into detail on what you would like. Ive one in mind that would be well worth making a phonecall to.

hi Gerry,

if thats the power your looking for then you really would be better off replacing your turbo for a 2nd hand one.(your old one is not rebuildable im afraid) as Renno said changing your turbo for anything other than the same as what youve got will run up other costs such as re-map etc.

how come it cant be rebuilt?? the chances of me getting a good 2nd one must be slim surely?? like russian roulette!!!

hi Gerry,

because most ihi turbo's simply cant be rebuilt. its just the way theyre made. you should get a 2nd hand one in good condition no problem. and yes the company in England you mention(in pm) will almost definitely have one.

George

ok gonna try em soon george nice one also thanks renno555

No problem. A second hand one shouldent break the bank but If budget allows id go for a TD05 16g with a 2 year Warranty.

mine is relatively good condition just the slight noise tbh i want a mint one when i buy one??? for all i know yoursa may or may not be any better than mine?? mine has done 40k with full jap history i can just hear the noise slightly for a couple of secs???

nah its not that loud it boost fine no smoke etc and if you werent listening for it you wouldnt hear it esp in lower gears i only heard it on motorway the 1st time in 5th at 60pmh when i put my foot down??? but now i know its there its annoying!!! yeah may leave it a while if it gets any worse will replace asap and if it goes tits up i shall be doing a 2.5 rebuild!!! any excuse eh!!!
