Not 100% sure but i think they tell you how much detonation is happening in the engine so you can run safely. The more detonation, the more lights! I think!
I presume its just an advancement on the piezo-electric knock sensors that exist in most cars nowadays? ( would ya look at me rememberin my fás phase 6 lol)

it goes in the block....only one as far as i'm aware
your car should already have one...its just that theres no visual or audible signals....the ecu makes all the adjustments itself....
least thats my understandin of it
