driving a 97 classic having trouble with the maf got quoted 395 plus vat for a new one does that sound right?

Yeah i think the earlier models are about that price. Later models like 98/99 onwards are cheaper, about 135.
Just a suggestion, but if you upgrade your ECU to Simtek or similar, you can do away with the maf sensor. Just a suggestion if you were planning upgrading/modifying your car. And save you ever replacing your maf sensor again.
Have a chat with Damo(Renno) at street performance or Dave Legacy at STI Tuning, they both now supply and map Simtek amongst other brands.

Yeah id be the same alright.
After all ive heard storeys of melted pistons caused by faulty maf sensors.
Some people even replace theirs every year regardless of if its gone or not.

so in the long run an uprated ecu and mapping is the better way to go?

You should have been mapped already,or running your car on booster mate...but yeah simtek ecu.... :D :Dhell yeah..

I think if your gonna keep the car a good while go for the ECU as it probably cost the same as maybe 3 maf sensors mapped and all(correct me if im wrong).
Then again, if you sell the car you could always remove the ecu and put the old one back in.
