Ej20k engine knocking.

Hi, my name is Ciaran and this is my first post (unfortunately a painful one).
At the start of the month I bought a 1998 version 4 Wrx from someone on this forum. The for sale ad is actually still up.

Anyway, last week I brought the car for a service to have piece of mind. So oil, filter and plugs were done. The oil that came out was quite thick (I found a receipt stating that 15w50 was last used). A day later a knock started in the engine coming from the drivers side between 2000-2600rpm. I brought it back to the mechanic today would had a listen around with a stethoscope. He said its coming from the cam area on the drivers side and also showed the car to a engine rebuild specialist who confirmed the same thing. I have been quoted €800 to take out the engine and fully pinpoint the problem.

I'm not too sure what I should do next. Has anyone had similar problems?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Have complete engine there for version 4 wrx if you need it, can be heard running at the moment still in car but will be breaking at the weekend.

Hi mate, any more details about the engine? Mileage etc?

Breaking car due to rust, has 138k miles on clock, has 137k marked as timing belt done but have no idea of history or when that was done as previous owner had parked for a while.
Car is running and driving no smoke on start up or under boot. No major rattles or noises that I aware of. Can be heard running if you need it.

The best option is to rebuild your own engine as you know what you have but if budget is an issue then engine swap maybe the cheaper fix

pain

its a pain when this happens seing as you have just bought it .. .. but if its a nice car and you intend to keep it .. best option is to rebuild ur own .. more expensive , but at least you know what you have got ..

Welcome along Ciaran. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I'd recommend having your own engine rebuilt for piece of mind, if you have the funds, by a reputable builder. Preferably someone who specialises in subaru rebuilds like Ali Burrows.

Thanks for the reply mate! That's my attitude towards the situation aswell. I was aware that it wouldn't be cheap but the person I spoke to yesterday seemed so disinterested in even talking to me :/

I'll see what my options are over the next week, I might get in touch with you about the engine. Thanks again!

I have only owned a subaru a few weeks and I've heard your name multiple times already ???? Thanks for the reply, I'll more than likely be in touch with you soon.

Thanks for the reply! I would definitely prefer to rebuild what I have already. Thanks again!
