idle problem

Have a 01wrx sometimes when ticking over it runs at 1500rpm other times the rev counter drops to 0 but the engine is still running but noticably slower anyone any ideas

Sounds like MAF sensor. Do a search here, loads of questions like this asked before.

Thanks also getting a knocking or tapping sound coming from drivers side of engine.

knocking dont sound like good news...is it noticable when cold..???

No only hear it when engine runs normally 750rpm apart from that its ok drives 100% only thing i got done lately was a new clutch about 4 weeks ago being hearing it ever since

As above sounds like maf dont like the sound of the knocking.
