How to tell differences in engines?

Hi all...

Thinking about buying my first subaru shortly and was wondering
How to tell the difference between jdm and UK engines easily... I see often enough "280bhp jdm engine" in adds but how do you really know the difference by looking?

I'm not sure how you could tell a car was JDM without paperwork on some models but on Hawkeyes, WRX and STI engines are 2.5 Turbo here but Japanese ones are all 2.0 turbo. Somebody else will know more than me. You can check the plate in the engine to see if it reads EJ20 or EJ25.
