I am looking for my first impreza awwwwh!

But I ain't gotta clue what to watch out for when looking at one, so here goes

Are high milers a big no no?

Is the boxer engine hard for a mechanic to work on?

A parts expensive if I do buy a dodgy one?

I was told on another website to get it mapped for out crappy fuel???

Any help will be appretiated!!

Cheers!!! :subaru:

you have to get the car remapped for our fuel you can map it for 95 ron with octane or without it or if there is a petrol station near you that supplies e5 even better :) its safer for the car
most jap imports are hard to work on for example the brother has a starlet gt 95, the oil filter is in a impossible place took him ages to change it the celica gt4 you have to take out the engine to replace the clutch  and if you were putting in a short throw gear lever in them you have to take down the whole gearbox

ask renno at street performance or dave at sti tuning about the remapping they will tell you what to look out for when your looking at a subaru

best of luck with your car  :subaru: go to this for info on remap http://www.isdc.ie/discussion/index.php?topic=4637.0

Kul didn't know the catostrophic effects of a bad map but every days a school day!!

Whats a average price for say a 99 WRX or STi??

Just look up Carzone and places for a ball park figure.
Then look in the classifieds here and see how the properly maintained ones here are.

I would not buy a subaru that was imported into the county from Japan, and has yet to be mapped. I'd only buy an enthusiasts one, or else one with a blown engine and put in a fresh rebuild.

welcome along subarus aren't hard to work on at all all jap cars are easy for most things especially serviceing compared to the european made cars eg VW citroen, renault etc. the country is full of subarus for sale at the moment and a lot of bad ones at that like like yogi said you should check the for sale section here. there is a beautiful high spec jap bug eye for sale cheap and well looked after

I Kinda agree.
I bought a jap import and unless you know what your looking at you may have to spend a few grand getting the car into top shape like me. Remap, general wear and tear items etc.
Buy from japan yourself not from a dealer here if you go for a fresh import. Same risk really(no warrenty in most garages) and you'll save a few grand

Yeah I want to try avoid Jap imports and English imports as I've heard people have been "enjoying them" a little to much. Would personally like a 97 WRX as a starting point but the ones I've gone to look at are suspiciously cheap or strangly over priced.

If you have time to wait and your budget doesent allow you to buy one if the mapped ones from the for sale section look out for a 97 with blown engine as has been said above. Then drop a brand new bottom end in and your sorted. Thats what id do anyway.

you dont need to take the engine out of a gt 4 to do a clutch!!

subaru s are ''not as easy to service compared to european cars renaults etc'' eg ... change spark plugs change the clutch parts are dearer

but they are a great car but not easy or cheap to service properly

@ lishagh you do have to take out the engine friend is a mechanic and he had to fit a new clutch to his car i think he knows what he is talking about :)

As far as I know lisagh is also a mechanic!
And if a lad specialises in something they often find easier and simpler ways of doing jobs like that!
My bro was told that the gearbox would have to come out to do the clutch on his gt4 but in the end it didn't!
