There's a bit of a banging noise from our Ford S Max 2.0 tdci on cold start up.It seems to change when I press the clutch. How can I be sure it's the flywheel?
Also periodically the clutch pedal won't come out fully without putting my toe under it.
Anyone shed any light.....

it sounds like your flywheel is on its way out alright ,the other issue your having could be either the clutch slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder needing replacement

My local mechanic says that the dual mass flywheel is a common fault on the tdci engine. Is that true Dec ? Mine went last august on my 08 mondeo and cost a grand to fix :angry1:

Yes very common fault in tdi fords or modern tdi in general
Its not the bearing making noise as they have fluid bearing, its the flywheel rattling
i have new dual mass flywheel with clutch kit and bearing available @ 550e inc vat and delivery

It's a common fault on every car it's Fitted to man not just Ford's it's probably the most stupid design every invented, wtf was wrong with a solid flywheel I'll Never know .

Just put one into a BMW we have 6 months ago and it's juddering again
