Opc Vectra Steam coming from engine...

Lads just recived a call from a mate he was out in his pride and joy his Opc 2.8 V6 280 bhp Vectra when he noticed steam/water vapour coming from the bonnet area engine temp gauge normal car driving normal then he told me he got a low coolent indicator bout 3 weeks ago and iit took 1 lt.
I just told him to let it cool down then have a look at the expansion bottle any ideas bout what is wrong?

A lot of rain today could be the cause of the steam........

As regards topping up..... Car should not use any water so I'd be looking for a leak in the system, checking rad cap , expansion bottle
