Steering light annoyance

Morning lads

I have an intermittent problem you may have some insight into

My Power Steering light keeps coming on one day, then off an other, with the loss and gain of power to the steering

Now I automatically assumed it was the pump, but it seems to be running fine, no noise or loss of fluid, it was then that my friend said unplug the wire that goes to the rack (connector on the brake servo) and after a disconnect/reconnect of the plug and on/off of the ignition the light went out, until half way to work this morning when I lost steering again

So firstly, where does that connector go, and what does it control
Secondly, can we assume its not the pump?

Did you try doing a full fluid change? Had the same with my legacy fluid change sorted it.
Not saying this will cure your issue but it a cheap fix if it does

hmmm thats an idea, my fluid is nasty and dirty sludge at this stage, whats the best way about draining the system?

Not sure on the proper procedure was 5 years ago I just put a bucket under the rack , took the cap off the bottle and cracked open the connections at the rack .
