oil temperature guage pointing to hot

Sunday Drivers
Hi All.
When driving my B4 this morning, after driving for about 5 or 10 minutes, the oil temperature guage moved all the way up to H (hot)
it stayed there for about 2 minutes then dropped back down to the middle of the dial, then went back up again.
The same happened this afternoon, but the quage went to H and stayed there.
I checked the oil and it seems okay.
Anyone any ideas, could it be the oil temperature switch, and how much will one cost.

Any help appreciated

Water gauge on the dials or a standalone water temp gauge?

Were you stopped when the temp gauge rose and did it fall again when moving?

no it dropped back down while driving, but this afternoon it stayed on hot, I checked the coolant resevoir,
and it was down past low.
I remember checking this last week and it was up to the full mark.

Stop driving it would be the first advice

Check the top rad hose for a small hole...they're a common fault

Thanks lads, I think it sorted now thanks to mike from limerick, I
Met him today at newlands cross to get a second hand air-con
Compressor.( forgot to ask him if he was a member here, he said he knows
Sean from Galway) I told mike the problem that I was having since yesterday,
And he had a look , he noticed that the fan was not working, he looked at this and noticed
That the power lead for the fan was not plugged into the radiator fan, as soon as he re-connected
This, it started working straight away.
Once again a big thanks to Mike, hopefully thats the problem solved, obviously whe I
Was getting all the work done a couple of weeks ago, the garage forgot to re-connect
The radiator fan lead.
