01 bugeye clutch replacement

Barney burns

Sunday Drivers
Hi all, new member here so please bear with me!
I purchased a 01 bugeye irish wrx 1 month ago, the clutch in it is juddering in 1st but other than that its fine, not too late on the pedal and no slipping.
I'm still fairly sure its not going to stick much abuse and i have decided to change it.
I'm looking for suggestions as to which kit to go for for a compromise of daily driving- durability .
Exceedy have been mentioned to me but as the car is standard apart from a cat back i reckon
a oem subaru one would do?
All help welcomed! savage site by the way!

Welcome Barney Burns.

Best getting an Exedy Silver Organic... nearest to standard spec.... but cheaper than OEM item and will hold 40% more torque over standard item. Also... has a nicer feel to it over an OEM item.

Make sure to get flywheel skimmed... and replace spigot bearing too.

Exedy silver box are oem spec. as item from subaru main dealer.

organic kits are the pink box kits. although i have seen ebay
sellers and the lkes use word organic with silver box kits.

more then likely your clutch has already been changed once
in its lifetime and flywheel wass not skimmed hence judder.

on a unmodified wrx there is no need extra expense of
pink box organic as oem be absolutely fine.

only one way to do them correctly. full clutch kit. flywheel skim
and balance. flywheel bearing and reat crank seal when
in there.

Dave

Hi Barney more than likely your flywheel that is the problem. The way to solve this is as jamie said skim the flywheel and a new clutch and spigot bearing (less than €5 )

Huh... wasn't aware of that Dave... I'd heard that OEM ones where Exedy... but never knew it was the silver one.

Yea i had done a little research into it but its always best to ask the experts!
With regards to getting the flywheel skimmed , what sort of cost are you looking at?
I am probably giving the work to my regular mechanic but i had not considered the need to
get the flywheel skimmed.. :ponder2: How much is normally removed?
what would be a ballpark figure for the work all in?
Oh and thanks for the replys!

Wait untill u see the flywheel, it may only be fit for the bin if after been damaged

Well I decided to go oem for the clutch, mechanic
Ordered the kit and got the wrong one!
He said the supplier sent a post April 2001 kit
And I need a jan- April 2001 one !
We rang a local subaru dealer who said they are all the same!
So waiting on an over night kit
Flywheel is spot on as is pressure plate
One a positive note the turbo seems in very very good condition!
0% play in it ,
I also need a new oem spec rear left shock
But I'm getting crazy prices . Anyone have a ball park on price for 1

Your still going to have the judder if you dont at least get the flywheel skimmed. Are you reusing the pressure plate aswell ? :icon_hang:

Also you'll need a spigot bearing and rear crank seal

as above man replace both shocks as you will be left with an imbalance and if you have to test the car soon it will fail on that

your only replacing the clutch disc... ? :icon_hang:

He said he orderd a Kit... so where you getting the only Clutch plate from??

I always consider a bit of clutch Judder part and parcel of Impreza 4wd ownership.

the part about flywheel and pressure plate being ok?

Yea its a full kit as advised and previously stated.. exedy kit with new pressure plate, bearing etc. my mechanic has assessed the flywheel and it isA1 in his opinion...
As for the rear shocks, the rear right seemed to have been changed very recently and is in good nick although i don't have receipts for it.. the back left is totally busted and i need two new "c" links for the rear anti-rollbar
Has anyone an idea what i should be paying for an oem spec or spurious shock for the 01 WRX? getting quotes of close to 200 euro inc vat at the moment

Yea I'm on the hunt for two at the moment
Just to update the clutch situation I got the car back
This evening and it is 100%
No Judder at all, solid pedal action and much the same
Pedal weight but a far earlier biting point.happy days!

Anyways thanks for all the replys and advice
And sorry for the newbie questions!
