Advice for rebuild on 96 WRX

Hi Lad's,

Recently against my better judgment, i committed the mortal sin of buying a cheaper than cheap scooby. I'm regularly over to the UK and picked up a 96 WRX for 1800 stg. It was a little tatty round the edges but all there.

Got about ten miles off the boat when the bottom end knock started as you could already guess. I've had a type ra and a type r before, and knew the signs to look for, and bought anyway, so i deserve it i suppose.

I now have what i'm pretty sure is a wankered bottom end. Slight knock to the lpassenger side of the engine which i presume is No3 cylinder. This increases with the revs to about 1800 rpm.. Then the exhaust drowns it out. As the car stands me small enough money i'm in two minds i dont want to break it, and i'll not get sale for it either.

I can source a warrantied engine for £635 or i can buy new OEM Subaru parts and re-build. I can also source new and used performance parts and damaged cars handy enough. For a budget of say €2500 what would you reccomend. I can source any parts needed but i need a pointer as to what the right spec would be

If i go new Subaru parts i'll use ACL bearings and a new crank, as i'd be weary of grinding the crank. If i go the japan route, i can ship over an sti engine and box but i'm told the 2.5 requires, gearbox, shafts and hubs as well as loom and ecu. Or i can buy any parts needed to spec the car up to a decent level, but would i need sti heads to see a proper gain.

Engine no is EJ20GNW4HD and the chassis no is JF1GC8KD3SGetc

Also a quick question GC8K is a model i've not come across before, its possible the car was re shelled at some stage as i dont know the complete history.

Thanks for the help

Tell me more about the engine for 635 with warranty ? For that price there disposable,

Is 2500 for the bottom end only ? Or where you hoping to get the pumps , gaskets , modine , studs , etc for that too ?

Its from a shop on the dreaded egay...

Email as seen here

Hi there,

We have one in excellent condition which comes with 3 months unlimited
mileage warranty and has only covered 30,000 miles. We can do it for £695.
Guranteed delivery within 3-4 working days at £100 to Ireland. Gearboxes are
£350. thanks

Regards

Motor Supplier

You can mail them on kal_elgee@hotmail.com

I reckon thats about the best value, you would find.

Oh and €2500 would be parts only for a decent set up on the whole engine... But for a stock rebuild what would i be looking to get out with? As it is i presume the engine off the guy in the mail above plus fitting would run to about 2 grand.

:D At £695 yes they'd be disposable........

is that for complete engine incl heads/ancillerys???

is it being shipped form lagos?????

So it is recon engine not just a second hand one, they say they split the block and replace the bearings.

I was just about to say that...

they all have guarenteed 22,000 miles... :D

but he says yours has 30,000miles...   there goes the sales pitch....

they then install them into a car and all the labour that goes with it........

they then remove it from the car and all labour goes with it.....

fully strip it down to short block...

they then fully strip the short block and rebuild it with brand new bearings and refit heads incl brand new head gaskets......

and on top of all that after about 30 hours of work they give you a 6 month no quibble UNLIMITED mileage warranty..,

and all for £695...........

wat top top guys.........

i'll take 3 please................ :subaru: :subaru: :subaru:

I like the below line

"Warranty is applicable once positive feedback has been left"

Agreed it sounds dodge out but really for that money i wouldnt be too pushed if the bottom end was in good order. Like that 1150 delivered add 600 for labour and €1750 later your on the road again. Its a cheap quick fix option..

Hey BevanBrady ,
I think what the lads are getting at....... it's a scam of some sort

I get that surprisingly, i'm not actually as gullable as you seem to think.

However i still would imagine given the sellers feedback and the fact its a proper e bay shop not a once off sale it would offer a certain amount of security. Even if the engine isnt 110% healthy at that price as stated its relativley disposable.

I'm actually thinking of going the whole hog on this and building a decent spec'd bottom end up. I can source ACL Bearings and toda rods and pistons

Pistons here

http://page15.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/t21889356

Set shown is for STI but i have been in contact with the seller and they can supply a modified oil pump, crank and correct pistons etc

Maybe the sellers feedback is so good because if you dont give the feedback you dont get a warranty. How do you change that page to english ? Or what spec are the pistons ?

Not being a smart ass, fair enough my first posts dont exactly contribute, and i'm coming to you looking for advice, but it appears a bit like Niallyboy etc were just hoping on the bandwagon.

Whether or not they swap bearings which i also doubt, at that price i'd still take a gamble on it. I may just import an engine myself from Japan, the only reason i haven't bought one already is the lead time. But at 695 that seller is still turning a healthy profit on the price i see engines for sale for on the japanese parts networks.

As for translations i find www.google.ie/tranlate to be handiest.

Some links translated these are a few i have offhand.

Usually Subaru used that seventh letter in the VIN for the model (A=MY93, B=MY94, C=MY95&96, D=MY97, E=MY98, F=MY99, G=MY00), whilst the tenth letter is an international code for the model year (S = 1995), but I've seen it said that the K is short for "Kai" = modified.

Otherwise GC8K or GC8Kai is a model code sometimes used in Japan for the 1998 Impreza 22B STi - but those cars had the starting VIN code of GC8E2SD. :ponder:

Thanks for the help, thats interesting. I reckon it was reshelled to be honest, as it has a uk turbo dash, bright button etc, and uk door cards, sun visor etc etc but wrx seats. Although the chassis matches the log book and the vin plate.

Think this may actually be sold, guy coming for another look tonight. I'm looking at a type ra at the moment, but waiting on word on finance, if i get that i'm going to get an 05 spec C.

but it appears a bit like Niallyboy etc were just hoping on the bandwagon.

Hey BevanBrady, sorry mate :D didn't mean for it to come across like that........
You had all the research done, so i was surprised you where going for the £695 option :dunno:

Anyway best of luck with your new purchase

Niall.
