Air vent part

I've a question for ye.
I decided to go ahead and retrofit air con in the car. It's not as bad as you might think although i'm not finished yet. Actually, if I had to start from scratch again, it would be handy enough. Having said that, I wouldn't have a clue what i was doing only for Padraic.

Anyway, part of the job is to put a coil in the back of the air vent. I've that done but there was this other thing there, I'm not sure what's its purpose was, but i put it back in when i put in the coil. I find now though that there does not seem to be enough room for both things and the knob that you use to get hot or cold air is gettin a bit stuck when you go over half way to turn it up to heat.

Does anyone know if I need this part or if i can leave it out??
Pictures below. I also put in a picture of the coil fitted just to give an idea of what i'm on about. You can't see the other yoke in there but it is behind it.

:ponder2: well adrian id say that is some form of air restricter in first picture and you prob wouldnt need it with the coil in as the coil will act as a restricter and another reason to take it out is to get a full flow across coil for better cooling...maybe when you wedge the 2 in its puting pressure on cable for heat

in galway tomorrow if you want to show me

Thanks Padraic. It took great work to get the cover on with the two things in place and after i managed it, i was beginning to think that there might be no need for it alright.
I'll give you a shout tomorrow sometime as there are a few things that i want to ask you that you'd need to see to know what i'm talking about.
Thanks a million.
