Folks, I need pointers.. google is not my friend these days. 
I'm a total newbie to Subaru. I've never sat in one, never mind open the bonnet ! When I see oily bits I like to know what I'm looking at, what the various bits do, and why they are needed.
I've read a few detailed how-to's linked from here, and I've read some basic Subaru flat 4 engine design stuff linked from some american site.
But, I'm missing the basics. I've read some engine rebuild threads, I understand the basics of the flat 4 design, the single timing belt, where the oil & water pumps are, etc, but I need some further very basic info abotu these engines. (I guess most of my hands-on DIY stuff is limited to the pre-ECU era. My pride & joy car still has points !)
So, tell me where to go to find out .... how does the engine work ... How does the drivetrain work... How does AWD work ? Is there any manual diff-lock ? Only certain models ? What are the different transmissions available.
