HELP - car wandering

Leglover

Sunday Drivers
any ideas lads? 2009 legacy, follows grooves in road and wanders everywhere, hard to keep in a straight line on bad road surfaces, perfect on smooth motorways etc, had tracking done twice by subaru and independent, subaru as usual say nothing wrong with it

What kind of tyres are on it.. It could be tramling. I had that as had many other using Bridgestone reo 70's. All over the place on a bad road till they heated up. If your using a near track tyre this could be your problem!

Most likely dodgy top mounts. Common problem with all legacys. Mine was at it for a while without any obvious knocking from them so I replaced tie rods, track rods, ball joints and checked everything else except the top mounts which it turned out to be. Car was pulling all over the road-like torque steer in a FWD.

is it coming more from the front or rear? any squeals etc.? trembling at any particular speed? could be rear trailing arm bushes. if these get worn car gets a kinda "four wheel steering" especially on uneven/bumpy surface. having said that it should have been spotted when you had the car seen. what is the mileage like on her?
trivial question, is your tyre pressure and wheel balance spot on?

its done only 70,000km, 18mths old, it has pirelli p zero's on it, when i first got the tyres it was ok so i wouldnt think it is tyres

i wouldn't blame the tyres either as long as the wheels are balanced and the pressure is correct. 70k is not a huge mileage but i had anti-roll bar bushes replaced at 20k because they started squealing...it could really be any of the bushes, joints or tops but that should have been found out- sometimes it is actually fairly difficult to find out while the car is on the lift...i would put me monies on rear trailing arm bushes...

As I've said above-the top mounts are a fairly common problem.A guy on UK legacy had the problem on his legacy within 50k.

the front LCA bushings on the 2003 onward Legacys is a known weak point, but that usually results in the car shuddering under braking.

how does a bad top mount look buy the way? An y visual signs that its fooked?

mine passed nct with worn bushings
often it is difficult to diagnose these with a car on the lift
would they not hear the knocking when they are doing the suspension test?

they do...it something rather not to be seen if you are in a relationship with the car- they might even use crow bars...having said that ~1.5 tone on the road at 120km/h behaves somewhat different
