Rear speakers for classic Impreza

Looking for speakers to fit the back shelf of my impreza. I've tried 16cm speakers and 6x9s. No good, wont fit. Has anybody else fitted speakers to their imprezas and if so what have you put in?

I put these into my rear shelf (after a lot of research) I only had to drill one hole through the metal shelf to get a secure fit and thus kept the standard rear shelf intact and original looking.

No, not strictly speaking "on" the shelf, but mounted on the underside of the metal shelf as a straight replacement for the original speakers. I had to take out the rear shelf (cloth/hardboard piece) in order to drill the extra hole.
 
Only the shelf? I had to take out the rear seats and strip out half the plastic panels to get at the speakers
 
Yes, of course, the seats came out first before you can pull the shelf out... but rear plastic quarter panels can stay as they are...
 
I think I'll leave the rear speakers out. I can hear the exhaust a lot better with the speakers out!!
