Sunday Drivers
m\3y speedo stays at 40mph the whole time untill u drive her on then she'll jump up to 80 100 and then work away till u get below like 60 again.
any ideas whats wrong is it the cable or clocks

maybe if you know someone, they might swap clocks with you and see what happens? Be best way of ruleing out one or the other.
could be the cable drive either

Isnt there a speedo sensor on the gearbox that the speedo cable attaches to? Perhaps that sensor is faulty?

Only on V4 onwards Andy. V1 to V3 are speedo cables.

As Ken said it could be the drive on the gearbox, or could be the clocks themselves but its unlikely to be the cable IMO as that would either work or not

Cheers Phil
as mentioned best to swap the clocks and see what happens.

Andy, v4 onwards no longer use a speedo cable, they use the sensor and signal is sent to ecu, so there is no mechanical cable on them at all, where as the older cars have the speedo drive cable going from gear box, directly into the back of speedo gauge..
.....another thing that mite be usefull... if the speedo sensor goes on the v4 on cars, i think the car also wont rev at all or at least beyond a certain point

Similar thing happens on the V1-V3 if there is no speed at all registered on the clocks after a few mins, the check engine light comes on and the car wont rev properly. Also idle becomes irregular
