anybody know much bout celica's?

sti 9029

Petrolheads
went to look at a gt4 yesterday,he had told me that the aircon wasn't working and there was a whine coming from the pump so that was grand, sat in and loads of lights on dash, eml, battery, airbag, abs light, took it for a drive and it wouldn't rev past 2500(could be just plugs cos its bin parked for about a year) and every so often the rev counter would just die??got back and left her runnin and when ya turn the lights on she'd nearly die!i know the battery was dead but could all these things be connected??
thanks

most dash lights will stay on if less than 12 volts in charging system!!!
in alot of cases the ecu will not allow the engine to rev hard(limp home mode)...down to either voltage or there is an engine electronics fault...
altenator belt ok???
:ponder2: :ponder2:

what year of GT4 is it?
Is it the 94 / 95 wrc?
Where was it?
Why has it been off the road that long?
etc...
I know some of the questions above might seem a little odd..... However if its been off the road for a long time without any reasonable explination, the chances could be that there was a major problem before it went off the road.
the WRC Celica as far as i remember only boosts from 2300 rpm upwards.... This would possibly lead me to believe there is a boost related problem... Was it smokey? how did it feel up to 2500 rpm? was it lumpy and laboured? Or did it pull smoothly up to that.

Get a second test drive but take a fully charged battery and volt meter with ya.... check all the fuel levels etc.... get a mechanics opinion.

These are all things that I recommended a friend in the UK to do and he got a stonking good car out of it. The limp home mode had kicked in on that 1 and the owner was lettin it go at very very little money.

its a 96,he's a friend of my brothers, doesn't drive it cos he has a vrs ocatvia and a company van, only 76k kms, used to belong to the owner of a toyota dealership so was very well looked after,,no smoke, pulled lovely upto 2500,very smooth on the road, what other things would be ran off the a/c belt??or is that a very stupid question??

Those cars have a standard boost guage-which should go all the way to the top-if it doesnt-walk away-its at least turbo seals gone-very common-and at worst a cracked piston.

How did suspension feel? Not cheap to replace on those. Also-that engine is old enough tech-they do seem to boost strongly at first-but it levels off quickly then-like an escort cosworth-its going to be a far less powerful car than an sti. Can be prone to rust too. WRC model is more desirable 255bhp standard.

yea lad listen for knocking in suspension links, that super strut suspension tends to play up..

500euro a side for new links ive been told

it was very smooth but i think i could hear somethin like wishbone bushings knockin in the front, like i've a lad that'll buy it off me in 2 weeks i just want to make sure theres not somethin majorly fcuked in it like wiring gone gammy somewhere yano

know what you mean lad

in my old levin which has the same suspension the links went on both sides, 350 a side for new parts

and i was told 500 a side for the gt4, which could be the knock your hearing

A friend of mine he is a mechanic has a gt4 they are a good reliable car, but as said already links and the likes of changing the clutch can be very expensive, there heavier on petrol compare to the classic sti, other than that they are a great car

As 20vbzr said there 500 each which is very expensive, they went in my friends gt4 it cost him 900 euro, he fitted them himself

Can anything be heavier on petrol than the classic STi? LOL! :D

@sti9029 I think without connecting to the diagnostic tool it's like looking for a needle in the hay. (or sth ;o)

only if you keep the right foot down

well donal leave that car running about 20min and give it a good driving and watch for smoke out the back and check for oil in the air box or filter... as i was telling you about the cousins the last day and i seen a few probs with them.... if you want me have a look at the aircon i am only over the road give me a shout

I would have to be getting that car fairly cheap mate, id reckon battery could be a lot of problem with lights and way it runs, but they are not great to go anyway and are worth very little even when perfect

Dont expect miricles....
Take it for a run with the new battery in it. It might take a short while to click out of limp mode if indeed that is what it is. there is a way to reset the ECU on them things. Might not be a bad idea aswell, would encourage the limp mode to go off.......
Its still going to show up errors on a test tho so might be worth while booking it in for a diagnostics test. Tell the seller that you will pay if you are buying the car but otherwise its coming out of his pocket.
If he really wants to sell it he will oblidge
