Mapping, E5 or Octane booster

Power22b

Sunday Drivers
Going to be getting a remap at some stage so what should I map it for, E5 maxol fuel or ordinary petrol with a bottle of Lucas octane booster every tank? Is there any down side to either? And which will help get most power?

e5 on its own is fine, and gets good results. but for better results booster is favorable( i prefare nf). best results come from e5 and booster. it all depends what your looking for from the map. also take into consideration the availability of e5 for yourself :subaru:

Well that's the big problem, E5 over on the west of Ireland is not readily available. What octane would normal pump fuel mixed with a bottle of Lucas octane booster per full tank be? Is octane booster bad for the engine in any way?

Think you should discount using E5 then, not really an option.

Normal pump fuel is 95 octane, by adding a good octane booster, ie. lucas or NF you'll gain 2/3 ron so fuel will be 97 or 98octane.

No known issues with cars running octane booster, mines been mapped with booster for last 3 years and no problem. The only issue is booster will shorten the life of your spark plugs, I've no technical knowledge so can't explain why, but it leaves a deposit on the tip of your spark plug which shortens the life of them.

How often would you be changing spark plugs when using octane booster? Any idea to what kind of power can be achieved using 95ron+octane booster on a sti with turbo down pipe and catback exhaust?

Well mine is a classic STi with straight thru exhaust & cotton panel filter and running 300bhp & 302 ft/lb torque so no reason you shouldn't hit those figures too.

Would deffo recommend changing fuel pump too though, they're less than a ton so cheap enough.

Plugs should still last you 30k kms.

Thanks Sti Brian, Think ill buy some NF octane booster been reading good things about it. Will it be ok to use normal petrol with NF for awhile till I can get a remap

As above best fuel quality in ireland is as below.

1. E5 + NF
2. E5
3. 95+ NF
4. 95

But it all depends where you are based.. If Galway area based where E5 is not available then 3 or 4 are your options.

Then definitely run her with booster until mapped. V5 Imprezas are designed to run on 102 ron fuel from Japan so they're not too happy on our crappy fuel.

As originally stated mine is mapped for standard 95 fuel & booster so its a good compromise for you.

Its mapped by Andy Forrest & Street Performance. Very little lag, boosting 1bar by 2800rpm & full 1.3bar by 3300rpm.

Theres something about it being 100 over there but with the altitude change its 102 over here it needs. Dunno where I heard that.

They have 102 @ the pumps over there but a Subaru is tunned for 100 octane..I can't see how altitude is going to change the knock value of the fuel..it could certainly change the density of the air effecting your air/fuel ratio but I can't see how it could effect the fuel itself

my sparkplugs were in a bloody mess when i changed em last week, think it was cause of the octane booster i was using.

im sure whatever you go for youll be happy. Try the search bar at top of page various topics regarding mapping etc.
