I have booked the scooby (1994 WRX GC8 not sure if its irish or Jap?) into a local specialist in cork to have that wierd noise checked, but want to completely check the engine and service it in full.

I need to know the following parts to buy and rough costs:

Oil filter
Oil what weight
Plugs
What belts should be checked and changed, especially timing belt (as car was sitting idle for a year)
Water Pump
Tensioner
Diff Oil
Gearbox Oil

Anything else you can think of

Many Thanks

Sorry Its at 137,000kms
And am unsure about the service history since I sold it to the last guy! ( I actually used to own this and it was mint and well looked after, but unsure of service in the 2 years since I sold it.)

in that case, you may get everything checked and replace in accordance with your findings!!!!

i'd check the timing belt also!!!

Magoo, where have u this booked in? I just recently bought another 1 of ur old scoobys lol and am lookin to just get oil changed etc

I'd imagine Mark Muprhy Motors in the Woolen Mills in Douglas in Cork.
He seems to be the only decent fella in Cork to work on Impreza's. He rallies them, has a few cars and his mechanics in there are his service crew.

Sound lads and cheap enough too.

yeah ive used mark murphy motors recently meself and they know there stuff alright....as yogi said sound lads and cheap aswell  some fellas would ride ya with the labour once they hear its a subaru :lolpoint:

If the car has been lying up and ya dont know when things were last done then do a full work up on it:

Oil Filter €10
Air Filter (Apexi is €80. Standard i'm not sure)
Fuel Filter €19
Oil 4.5ltr €60 (5w30 or 10w40)
Coolant 7ltr €50 (Not anti-freeze)
Spark Plugs €45 (NGK platinum PFR6B)
Timing Belt €105 (Genuine)
Gearbox oil 3.5ltr €60 (75w90 GL5)
Rear Diff Oil 1ltr €15 (75w90 GL5)

Maybe a thermostat to be safe €20

The only other belts are the Alternator/power steering belt and the air con belt, only replace if cracked/worn looking. Squealing can be fixed by tightening the belt tensioner.
Don't replace the water pump unless its leaking of the car is overheating
Get the mechanic thats doin the timing belt to check your tensioner before ya buy it.

Hope this helps

so it should cost around 450 + labour. how much would you think labour would cost?

Labour on a timing belt alone is about 250euro.

I'd say your looking at close to 1K to have all that stuff done MrMagoo.

should be 150 max for labour on timing belt and i'd change the water pump too if your doin the belt
[/quote]

From experience, i wouldn't do the water pump unless it needs doing, I know its the perfect time to do it but ya can check it for free play on the pulley (rocking left to right) or any coarse feeling/sticking in the pulley bearing when you rotate it. If it feels fine and there's no leaks or overheating then I'd leave it be.

They don't fail that often anyway, the cheapest water pump is gonna be €70 and a genuine one will be about €140

Much appreciated lads for the info, Got the service done:

Oil filter
Oil
K&N Panel Filter Oiled and cleaned
Plugs
Diff Oil
Gear Oil
Fuel Filter
Timing Belt was actually replaced before I got it, had it checked out and confirmed by he who did it.
Also the water pup is good so not replacing.

Now for the pain in the arse bit!, had a whining whistle noise coming in 5th gear, and he took the back casing off the box while on the car, to see if he could see anything untoward. Nothing, the oil had no filings and it didnt seem to be bearings as they were done 1k before I got the car, seems like the shims?? werent put back properly and gears werent meshing exactly.

So box is now out and should be finished today! And ill be back on the road in my old baby ready to enjoy scooby ownership for the 3rd time!!!!

Right, just got an update and avery strange one at that. The mechanic rang me sounding baffled!.
He said there was rust inside the gearbox, and the only suggestion he could come up with was that when the bearings were being changed it must have been left out in bad weather. He is cleaning it up and replacing one bearing he thought was rough! Hopefully that will sort it. Shuld do as there was no grinding or crunching just a slight whine.

Wierd!
